My latest MIJ project-"Club Date" style!

Loading...

Greetings,

Found these on ebay for $80! They are from a forum member (I asked the seller), but he/she said they have not been on here in years.

The floor tom is a double lug, and the wrap is a little more plum than red. The rack and bass have the familiar "Made In Japan" with the blue printing and star. The floor tom is unbranded. Curiously, all three interiors are different. The rack tom is natural interior with no re-rings. The floor is natural with re-rings. The bass is painted gray with no re-rings.

I think this will be a fun project. I am going to "convert" the floor tom to center mounted lugs as well. The good thing is that the rack tom lugs are the same as found on many MIJ style snares, so I already found an MIJ snare on ebay for cheap, and I'll just use the lugs off of that.

I already have a red sparkle kit, so I am going to most likely re-wrap these (that way, I can cover the original lug holes for the floor tom). I am NOT concerned about resale value; I just like to have fun fixing them up and have fun playing them! Any suggestions for my choice on wrap? I want to keep it authentic as far as MIJ colors/wraps were concerned. I was thinking wither WMP or Blue or Aqua sparkle. I already have MIJ Kits in Red Sparkle, Blue Onyx, Red Onyx, BDP, Gold/Orange Sparkle and white satin flame, and other kits in Silver Sparkle and Green sparkle. Other than what I mentioned above, did I miss any "traditional" MIJ wrap choices? Was Aqua Sparkle even available back then?

Another question: is the cymbal holder pictured "THE" elusive Star cymbal mount? I have not seen one like that before.

Final question: I have seen a fair number of these club date style MIJ kits. All the ones I have seen, either didn't come with a floor tom (rack, snare, bass) or the floor tom is always different (i.e. double lugs). Were these MIJ Club Date kits not available with a floor tom?

I'll keep this thread updated as I progress along.

Hello, v,

Sounds like a fun project! You don't however, have the elusive Star mount. I don't believe aqua sparkle was available then either. Check out Ralf's site and the online Tama catalogs.

Best of luck in your restoration!

The wrap pictured is from a Stewart kit of the era. I've been calling it turquoise but if it is what you mean by aqua, it gets my vote, especially because you have all those other finishes.

[edit] I have seen 14" MIJ floor toms with center lugs as part of a club date style kit...and they're awesome!

That rail is in great shape! I think they'd look cool in black marine pearl or maybe a strata red....?

i dont' think anything on the drums was really missing or broken (except the original floor tom legs and a tension rod on the bass). i mounted the tom on the rail mount for a few gigs and it was solid as a rock. i love the edges on the 12" tom, too.

What a great price and a cool little MIJ project. I vote for aqua sparkle also!

Oh...and I have a "Made In Japan" badge like these drums have, if you are interested. Just pm me your address and I'll send it to ya...no charge. I don't need it, but you might.
