My Grandfather's Zildjian Cymbals

Loading...

Some of you may have seen my thread asking about my great grandfather's practice set of Tempros, and I'm glad you were able to help me out.

eamesuser said "there may be more value in the cymbals,if they are pro quality zildjians or paistes for instance." Well, we have 7 cymbals. Six of them are Zildjian, and one of them is Sabian. Unfortunately, my LG G4 takes some ridiculously large photos and they are wider than most computer monitors, so here's a link to my imgur album: http://imgur.com/a/fh7vs

Any input is greatly appreciated. If somebody knows the value of these too, that would be amazing. These were used by a professional jazz drummer, so if that information helps, there you go.

The 22" is not 2250 grams, it's closer to 3100. The Sabian has weird circles in it (they show up in some pictures) and one of the smaller (16"?) ones has some holes drilled into it.

If you've got any questions, let me know. I'll try my best to answer them.

Quick overview:

The AMIR is more of an entry level cymbal. The Sabian with those unusual circles is also. I forget the name right now but it's one of the low end B8 series from memory.

Other than that I see a Hartrick Large Stamp type I (aka Block Stamp or Hollow Block)

http://black.net.nz/avedis/avedis-gallery.html#large

and I might see a Hartrick late 50s Small Stamp (SSA form with the top missing as happens with SSAs)

http://black.net.nz/avedis/avedis-gallery.html#small

although on second look I'm leaning more towards a Hartrick Large Stamp type III (with the no dots) because yours lacks the bold elements of the late 50s Small Stamp. Here's the Hartrick Large Stamp type III (which is often found to have the top portion poorly pressed in just like the SSA):

A measurement of the stamp height would sort that out. You can see the stamp heights on my site.

I also see a 1960s stamp.

http://black.net.nz/avedis/avedis-gallery.html#60s

But I don't see how to relate the stamp close ups to the cymbals on a first look. But I can tell you that the one with the rivet hole and stamp visible together is the 60s, and the one with the most keyhole is 50% likely to a the late 50s small stamp (based on the fine bell lathing style only -- and bearing in mind I no longer think I've seen a late 50s Small Stamp photo). Not sure if the Large Stamp is the largest diameter. Which brings me to: we need to know the diameters to predict price. Once you sort out diameters and production eras, then prices are here:

http://black.net.nz/avedis/avedis-prices.html

although I still have to finish the first pass analysis on 16" and smaller. And I haven't looked at prices for AMIR or Sabians. Only Avedis Zildjians prices in that link. If you need prices for smaller than 16" (which I haven't finished doing yet) let me know.

Wow! Thanks for the reply! So I need to correlate the logos (and their height?) with the diameters of the cymbals and get back to you?

A family group portrait isn't really all that helpful. What helps is a separate post for each cymbal and in each post you have

1) a picture of the cymbal from the top,

2) a picture of the cymbal from the bottom, and

3) a picture of the trademark stamp.

In each post you give the diameter and the weight. As in:

This is a 17" cymbal which weighs 1154g.

That's what is needed. The measurement of trademark stamp heights isn't usually needed to tell them apart, but in this case it would be nice to confirm what we're seeing. My site gives examples of how to measure as well.

I understand from what has gone before that you don't know how to resize your pictures down to small enough to load onto this site. And I also know that the Administrators of this site don't like people having large pictures posted elsewhere. If it is all too difficult then you can email pictures to me. I don't give my email address in clear text to cut down on spam from 'bots, but here it is as an image

You just need to make sure that the name of each image reflects what is in it. I use the convention

diameter-weight-view

as in

17-1154-top

because I deal with lots of images in my research work.
