My first MIJs

Loading...

Yesterday my cousin from Oregon was here and he brought me a 14x20 and an 8x12 Pearl kit in a kind of light blue and black and white tiger pearl. Missing Bottom hoop and ts on tom and ts and claws on BD reso side. Ugly divot on bottom edge of tom. Best part is, he got them for FREE at a yard sale! So I got them for free too!. Be a fun little project if I don't have to spend much for parts. I would post pics, but my camera is too good and I'm too damn dumb.

Well, the hard part is going to be finding a floor tom in the 14" catagory. I do know that you can use some of the larger power toms for one, if you don't mind doing the work. Legs for generic work are cheap enough, you buy decent used ones for 15 or so, and then order those bad little Pearl footies, ot the Gibraltars, those little air boots. I have a pile of leg mount brackets if you need some. Is this a 3 or 9 ply kit? The 12 will be a 6 ply if not a 3 ply/rings. The bass could be 7,8 or 9, if not 3 ply/rings. Let's see them,. These new cameras are point and click. And if they are too big, go here: http://www.picresize.com/ and follow the instructions.

Ahh, Pearl....nice older version. Well, they are certainly lauan. Probably 9 ply. A good sanding of the interior and some lacquer will seal it up for a really warm sound. I use 100 then 220. No need to get really super into sanding, just enough to smooth out the grain and close the pores up some. Both shells will benefit from it, if you want to mess with lacquer. Even if no painting is in your future, the sanding would help, and the edges should be smoothed anyway for an easier tuning. This is not to change the contour, rather to give the collar a smoother fit and make it easier to slip and slide over the edges for smoother tuning. I burnish in wax on mine, they really move nicely then.

No, Jonni....LOL Those were catching water from the roof leaking. That was a first time gig with an old high school friend for a Xmas party at a hot rod garage. It rained all day, a rare occurnace in So. Calif. We finally found a spot where the rain didn't hit my kit. This was also the first time I used my late 60's Istanbul K ride for a gig, it was a beauty.

Tom, if your bass drum is a match, I'd be willing to trade a MIJ kit with a floor that needs a little work for yours, or something else. I've been looking high and low for a kit to match mine to make a double bass Belleson set-up. Let me know
