My favorite snare drum-

Loading...

Typically I see postings for hard to find,or elite, expensive snare drums being the favorite snare.I'll have to go against the grain on this one. Right now my favorite is a $69 Pearl 5 1/2 X 14 Chrome over steel with Diamond lugs. Probably 68 vintage. Thin rims,8 lug and very wet sound with a lot of "clank". I don't think sound men would like it-they'd have their tape out. The tip style throw gets stuck when putting the snares back on if you don't lift it from the bottom. It has meat-you "dig"into it,and it's happy.Any others out there with a budget favorite?

Why yes I do and it is a 1967 Acro. Dont know why really but it is the best sounding snare I have. And I do own a Supra and a Keystone jazz fest and the Fibes snare, along with about twenty others.

Thank you!

I wouldn't call it my 'favorite' snare, but I have a '66 Acro that sounds incredible.

Not too long ago I fixed up what was either a late Japan or early Taiwan Pearl stencil COS snare with the diamond lugs. I wasn't expecting anything but a mediocre at best, but playable, beginner drum. I put on new heads, top and bottom, and a new set of the cheap Taiwanese 20 strand snare wires.

When I got it all put together and tuned it up, I couldn't believe my ears! I thought I had inhaled too much WD-40! This $30 dollar snare sounded like a drum that cost 5 times as much! It sounded crisp and fairly articulate, maybe not quite as loud as a more expensive drum, but the tone was there in spades. I had intended to fix it up just to bring it back to life and pass it on to a kid or to someone as a back up snare, but I haven't been able to make myself let it go!

The lesson, I think, is that when you put the time and effort into a piece of equipment, you might get a result that far exceeds your expectations. Not every time, of course, but you never know.

that would be my 1976 Ludwig LM 402. This particular drum is my go to snare drum.

I think I've posted a similar response to another thread, but ...

My son is the drummer and I'm more of his personal drum tech. :)

He has, at his disposal, the following:

1966 Supra

early 1970's Gretsch 4165 (10 lugger)

mid 1960's Rogers Luxor

1968 Jazzfest reproduction

1970 Acrolite
Out of all of these snare drums, the "low price" marketed Acrolite is his go to snare.

Another vote for the Acrolite.I have a 65 acro and a 65 supra 400(pitted to hell and back),and the acro just nudges it out ever so slightly.

Then again, there's my Slingerland artist,and my 46/ 47 Radio king,my 65 Jazzfest and..........I'm so confused,must be the heat.

I have two that I like a lot, maybe not my favorites, but I do enjoy them.

One is an early 70's Acrolite Standard. It just works.

Another is a 1962 Slingerland six lug student model. It has some great character. I like it tuned up in the upper mid-range. Really articulate.

The "61" or so Gretsch 4105 works well for most things. Pre 40's Duplex aluminum "Aircraft" snare puts out a serious crisp snap. Slingy student model is in the restore pipeline

Nothing special here but I like them.

I have an old steel Pearl also. Paid $7 for it from goodwill cleaned it up put new heads on it and it sounds pretty good, responsive, clanky and loud.
