My 78 Rogers are about ready for heads... any suggestions?

From mcjnic

I've got several brands stickers on coated heads - no problems. I tension them and THEN put on the sticker. It makes sense if you think about it.

Ditto. I put a Gretsch sticker on a coated Ambassador about seven years ago and have never had any problems. You can't even tell it's a sticker from more than a foot away.

I'd say the head choice depends on your playing and music style. Emperors are a nice choice for heavier playing (these sizes are made for it!).

I got the same sizes (14, 15, 18, 24) recently!

I think they're from around 74, and as you can see, the owner decided to switch from the swivo to the memrilok DOH

THoughts on what to do with the enormous holes?! I'd like to just reshell the hardware someday, but who knows. The small holes can easily be done with dowels, but not sure about the bigger places.. ..

A re-wrap job would at least cover the holes cosmetically...

I think Jaye said he keeps spare shells around and cuts patches from them to plug large holes. Might be tough with the irregularly shaped holes in your pics, but it's a thought.

Even though Bonham and many after him did the Emperors on big drums and tuned them up, even doing coated Ambassadors top and bottom (or even coated Diplomats on the bottom) will remind you what the drum really sounds like with as little "head" getting in the way as possible.

Did it on my oversize 14', 18', 24" Camcos at least and it works a treat. If it's not tough enough, then you go to Emperors....
