My 60's Gretsch Kit Restoration Project

Loading...

Hey Knavel,

Ironic indeed!

RE your brothers kit, I'd love to see a pic if you find the time to post/upload it, always looking for ideas.

I'll looking into the 3M stuff, sometimes I can order that kind of thing through Farnell or RS Components, electronic parts stores, but they often have access to adhesives.

I've located a source for the leg tips and original tom mount wingnuts, the same guy also restores microstrainers, waiting on costs though.

On closer inspection it seems the bass drum spur mounted were retrofitted and are actually Premier mounts, now to find Premier spurs, not sure I want to switch back to Gretsch now since they have added extra holes for them... GRRR.

Any thoughts on heads? A drum tech suggested Remo Coated Ambassadors all round, both resonate and batter heads.

Let me know if you ever make it down here again, I'll take you out to Thelema and we can hit a couple other spots along the way.

Cheers

Matt

Matta,Thanks for the feedback. Ironically the guys I used to work with in SA were in London today and I just had lunch with them.Real quick: When my brother got his kit in the finish you have, there was no mounted tom. My other brother created one on a stripped tom we found by using standard black and then some sort of lacquer that he dropped sparkles on to and then they dried. It was pretty darn close, no one could tell unless they looked closely. I can send a pic if you like when I get back home.Maybe that's a way to patch. The greatest adhesive for wrap is 3M 30NF, I just used it for my own peeling Gretsch wrap. I had to really struggle to get this from USA so here again might be a problem. Leg tips I bought at my local hardware store. I just took the legs in and got ones that fit. Not rubber as much as that plasticy vinyl but looked good at the end of the day. However you fix that snare just be sure that you don't add any holes--as if you need me to tell ou this..... I'm pretty sure you can find those strainers on ebay if you don't mind the wait and surely you can rig up something in the meantime.OK gotta run but let me know. The saddest day was when I finished my last bottle of Thelema estate wine a few years ago from the time before they had all those different variations. You should go there that drum set gives you a reason to celebrate. I've talked about doing the cape argus bike ride and when I do maybe I can get my fix of drumming :)

Matt,

1) You'll find the aluminum Gretsch spurs if you are patient. Unfortunately I can't do anything about the extra holes. A correct (replacement) Premier one might be fine as well. Frankly what's done is done and that's life. There are so many sweet aspects of this set that I wouldn't be too bothered (esp at your price).

2) Remo Ambassadors are what many many people use for the standard vintage set-up. I have them on my Ludwigs and they are totally fine.

BEWARE, Gretsch drums that are 6 ply (like yours more likely than not be) are slightly oversized. Hence sometimes the Remos (or anything else) are a very tight squeeze. There are lenghthy discussions on this subject. Some people even cut the Remos.

The easy approach is to pick up Remo IF you can return them and just see if they fit. If they do great, if not take them back.

There is one drum head that's made for Gretsch and that is Aquarian American Vintage. While I can get anything from USA (because I'm a yank) I live in Europe and so I just eliminated the risk and got the Aquarians. They have an eggshell coloring to look like calfskin heads. I think they are really nice looking. Some people say they sound bad but they seem alright to me.

3) I've attached a pic of my brother's set in your finish. Sadly, he is not very tidy and the set could use a cleaning, as the pic will show.

The mounted tom is the sparkle finish my other brother made for him. The snare, floor tom and bass finishes are actual Gretsch.

Deal on that Thelema. Send me your email in the PM service so I have it and if I'm lucky enough to come to CT I'll find you! (I usually go to Joberg unfortunately).

Hi Guys,

Well it has been a long time coming!

I ended up sourcing parts from 3 continents, various suppliers and am proud to say that bar the bass drum spurs (which are Premier to fit the retrofitted mounts) and the hoops (Gibraltar), all the other parts are original.

I've had the parts for some time but with my 9 month old I've not found the time/motivation to get it all together, though I got a call yesterday to get the kit ready for Saturday for hire by none other than Cindy Blackman who is in town for our annual Jazz Festival... motivation enough!

So here she is, I think she cleaned up nicely and really enjoying the maple hoops on her.

She has coated ambassadors on both batter and resonant heads for all the drums.

Thanks again for all the advice, support and help!

Cheers

Matt

Thanks Blairndrums!

Yeah, a great finish and I believe one of the harder ones to find since 'Anniversary Sparkle' was only out for a limited period.

The kit got it's first gig last night and was played by Cindy Blackman Santana.

I loved having her feedback and she loved the kit, and as a Gretsch endorsee and multiple vintage kit owner I appreciated her comments.

The snare needs a bit of work, largely with getting the snare bed tighter and to repair the throw off (which I knew and warned her about, she ended up using another snare) and I need to replace the tom mount which is getting wobbly. I'm going to go with a Steve Maxwell replacement as I want a gig worthy kit, will keep the original as a keep sake but bring it up to being in tip top shape.

Attached is a pic of her playing the kit, I was honoured and the 1000+ people on the room loved it. A bunch of local drummers came up to me after the show and placed offers on it, though I'm not interested in selling :)

Cheers

Honestly I've never been one for signatures, I have memories, and that is enough for me. She graciously had a pic with me at the end of the show when we talked shop about drums, my kit and she gave me some great advice.

Cheers
