My 1st Gretsch Round Badge kit!

Loading...

Hi All - Wanted to share this with you and I hope for some insight as to roughly what year they are from. I am an avid Gretsch fan for many years. I own 3 (now 4) Gretsch kits. I had the pleasure of working for Kaman (KMC) for many years and ended my tenure there as the Gretsch Drums Product Manager. The brand is very near and dear to me. I was never able to get my hands on a vintage kit though... Well it finally happened. I traded my 66 Ludwig kit away for this. 22/13/16/snare in silver glass. Sorry there are only a couple of pictures. I set it up in my basement to check it out and tweaked it a bit. Three days later it was on the gig. I did not take the snare out as it's going to need more tweaking. The toms and bass drum sound HUGE. I am very happy. Anyways, from what I can tell, all the important parts there and everything looks to be original. There are a few things that I am wondering about...

1-All badges are present and look to be correct. Tacked on toms and grommeted on bass and snare. There are NO tags in any of the drums. Thoughts?

2- The rail mount and cymbal holder position. Is the rail mount position correct? Seems low on the shell but there are no extra holes. Looks to be original. The cymbal holder is smack dab on the top. Seems like this was a 50's thing to me. Could it have been special ordered in that position?

3- Edges. They all look original. Toms are reverse round overs and snare and BD look to have 30 degree edges. All in great shape.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Nice, nice, nice. Everything looks as it should, though the rail at that era is usually down a bit more and very close to the back hoop. The position of yours is better for most of us nowadays. Super cool. Enjoy that one.

PS - I'd guess 50's. maybe very early 60's because there are no interior tags. Gretsch guys to the rescue.

Thanks Dan!! I was really blown away with how they sounded all mic'd up. I will be playing them this weekend as well. I can post more pics if someone needs to see something more specific.

Looks good to me. I have a similar set also in Silver Sparkle. The top center placement of the cymbal bracket was a 50's thing that was standard on some of their catalog sets.

I think it`s an early 60`s or before because you can see the diamond plate fasteners. Something like a Name Band Kit,..those were great quality.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Oh my! I'm drooling at this time. I also would trade my Luddys for something like that. Congrats.

That's a very nice looking drum set. The tom mount and cymbal mount are in familiar places for a guy who owned and played several brands of American-made drums in the 50's, 60's, and 70's. For the drum sets that I ordered for myself, I usually had the cymbal mount off to the drummer's right side of the bass drum. If the center cymbal mount was already there, I would place a small crash/splash on it, and either install another cymbal mount for the ride cymbal on the right of the bass drum or use a floor stand for the ride cymbal.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Gorgeous! Everything looks kosher to me. I'd guess that these are late 50s or early 60s. Gretsch moved to diamond plate floor tom legs and die-cast rims around that time. I believe they started adding tags around then as well. I have a kit with stick-chopper hoops, no tags, and Gladstone floor tom leg mounts (rather than diamond plates), but the matching snare has die cast hoops, so I'd place mine around the late 50s. Yours is probably just slightly newer. But there may be experts here who can narrow it down further.

Kits:
1950s Gretsch Name Band in Midnight Blue Pearl (13/16/22/14sn)
1965/66 Ludwig Club Dates rewrapped in Black Diamond Pearl (12/15/20)
