Muting my Rogers Bass Drum

Loading...

So I've had my 1972 Rogers Starlighter IV (22.13.16) for about 5 years. Until recently I had a pillow inside the bass drum and then I read that putting things inside a bass drum kills the resonance and cut of the drum, so I took it out. Completely wide open this drum sounds ridiculously resonant, undefined and midrangey. I tried a reso head with a hole and it sounded fairly hollow and flat. I've now got a felt strip on each skin and its the best its been but still a bit too much of everything (and the very boomy bass gives me a bit of a headache).

How do you fellow Rogers players here mute your bass drums? what would people have done back in the day when my kit had come out?

Oh I've got a coated Emperor on the batter and coated Ambassador on the reso.

cheers!

Muting?? What is that?

All my vintage bassdrums have an emad on the batter side and a coated emperor or a fibreskin on the reso side. Nothing inside the BD. Low end is good and low without crazy resonance. You might want to use that felt strip on the reso side if you think that the kick sings too much.

Keep fixing them up...

Once, got a recommendation to use crumpled up newspaper. Never tried it, but supposed to work a treat.

Aquarian super kick III for batter, and Evans pre muffled resonant is what I use on my Rogers 22 and 20. Really great for bringing out a tuneful focused low fundamental, yet leaves some resonance.

The Emad is a nice head also, and used previous, but the SKIII is much more warm and natural sounding to my ears.

Evans stopped producing the reso head so in a bit of quandary what to use going forward.

Jazz tuning = entirely different.

That sounds about right, is the Evans reso the EQ1?

Have you tried the Powerstroke 3 and compared it to the Super Kick III?

On my Rogers 20", I use an Aquarian Super Kick II with no additional muffling and it sounds amazing. Really cuts through when I need to without being overly boomy and easily competes with any 22". But at the same time can be finessed for more subtlety.

Sounds like you wanna shorten the note rather than mute it. I use party balloons inside or the M-n-M blow up guy. They shorten the note to almost a thud, and don`t take away resonance much. Solid things inside like a blanket or pillow, rot the wood and mute the note. If you think about it, a balloon takes up airspace but doesn`t have the effects of a solid object in there.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

drumfx gave the best advice so far. You WANT the drum to produce a good low fundamental note, not a dead/dry thud. What makes the difference is, if you're playing with a band most of those overtones produced by the bass drum get lost in the mix. If you practice alone, it can sound a little ringy, but that's ok. If the drum is tuned right it'll sound great without any muffling.

Too many great drums to list here!
