More boom on a 20" bass drum?

Loading...

Hi guys,

Interesting ad on Reverb this morning. A nice looking 1967 Ludwig kit in burgundy sparkle. 12/16/20 with the bass drum "special ordered" at 18" deep. The original owner certainly had vision into the future!

I wonder how much more Ludwig would charge for special sizes like this?

I also wonder if the owner could find a zippered case to fit that cannon?

Regards, MB

Whatever the extra cost, and it probably wasn't much back then, that's a rare bass drum. The low end must be huge!

How deep were their 20" floor toms?

It may be a converted (at the factory) floor tom shell.

If those were only 16" deep (I only played a Ludwig kit with a 20" floor tom during high school- it was the school's kit, and that was a long time ago), then truly a custom build by Ludwig.

Lots of red flags for me on this one. Something just isn't "right" about that bass drum. I would need to see more pictures before believing this was a special order.

Is that really an 8x12 mounted tom? Looks like a 9x13 to me. In that era, I believe the 8x12 toms all had small lugs.

I'm thinking at that price I'll buy it and cut the bass drum down to a 14" depth.

Good eyes, Dan! I dunno when Ludwig started putting the larger lugs on the smaller toms, but my date-stamped Dec 31, 1968 Hollywood kit has the small lugs on the 8X12.

And LOL on the "I buried Paul." "Oh, untimely death!" (in the same song)
