Modern vs. Flat Based Hardware - What do you gig with? Last viewed: 3 hours ago

So, I recently finished repairing various flat based stands and completed the set and have been jamming with them in my basement. It came time to switch kits and setup, and I was tearing down and stacking all my flat-based HW and was astounded at small that pile was. Then it dawned on me......perhaps I should consider gigging with those more so I have less to haul that will take up less space.

So what do you gig with more - modern or flat based? What say you.....and take the poll while you are at it.

Just curious how oblivious to the advantages of flat-based HW. I have always thought it was simply the vintage look that was the reason for the preference. I have been aware that some chose thinner stands for easier haul, but I never really thought much of that until I recognized a great deal more when I looked at that (small) pile. I just had one of those moments - "Wow....have I been completely oblivious to the obvious and been out of touch with this issue??" I feel a bit foolish!

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

I have a set with DW 9000 hardware, and a set with 6000. Man oh man what a pain in the butt it is to move 9000 hardware. Every piece is built like a tank. But as I've gotten older, I'm sick of all the trips needed to move that 9000 set. I've gotten it down to three trips with the flat base stuff, including the drums. The stability is not as firm, the adjustments aren't as flexible, but nothing has ever tipped over on me with flat base stands.

Usually modern flat based stuff - DW 6000. Got it with a kit I bought, tried it out and liked it.

Flat DW. Sooooo much easier, and I don't worry about what it looks like to anyone else.

If I gigged, no question, Yamaha hardware all the way. That's what I use in any setup I have. Flat based stands are classy, but they are not versitile; + they can eat your cymbals if you're not careful -

I played over 100 shows this year, practice 3 times a week (with the band) and sit in with other groups. I'd love to, but if I played vintage hardware, it would be dead by now. I'm fairly hard on my hardware but it's hard to care and tear down nice when it's 100 degrees outside (or 1 degree!) or if it's raining, snowing, or if your in NYC/Chicago etc. I take my time and I put my kit up so it stays nice. Then I move to hardware. If I have time, I take it slow and pack it in my anal retentive way. Otherwise, it can be kinda ugly. I leave my vintage hardware at the house with my Mod Orange Ludwig kit that I have retired. If I'm ever blessed enough to have roadies, a tour bus, etc. then I'll most likely move towards some function/fashion vintage hardware. But at that point, I probably wont have a heart attack when something breaks...No I probably still will.

The new Ludwig Atlas flat base stuff looks great to me. I love DW pedals and hi-hat stands, but not a fan of their other hardware.

Oh my. The new Atlas hardware is just killer...but, the price tag!

I use 1400 and 1402 depending on the gig. I have em ready on a bag. I keep ach stand wrapped with a thick towel. My wife makes fun of me all the time. She says that I treat my hardware better than I treat her!

It's hard to mount a tom stand off of a flat-based stand and have it be sturdy, so I mostly use modern hardware...
