They may have started as early as 1969, actually. There was a period of overlap, with both RB and SSB drums being produced and sometimes mixed within the same factory kit. I have such an example.

Gretsch Black Nitron 2008 USAC 20-12-14
U.S. Mercury (Star) '60s Blue Sparkle 20-12-14 + 14sn
'66 Ludwig 5x14 Supraphonic
'60s Ludwig 5x14 Acrolite
'70s Ludwig 402
'50s WFL 6.5x14 Supreme Concert
'70s Slingerland 5x14 140 (alum)
'60s Gretsch RB 4103 BDP
'70s Gretsch SSB 5x14 4108 (alum)
'00s Gretsch USA bronze 6.5

As for cymbals, I saw him in 1968 a few times and he was using all Zildjian it appeared.

20's (ride and a crash) and 18 crash and 14 hats?

Me and Mitch had a "pint or two" together in 1979 at the original Cat And Fiddle in Laurel Canyon. Clem Burke introduced us.

We discussed Radio King drums.

Thank you Clem!

Man the coolness vibe here is awesome...

I could almost drift into the purple haze and see back in the day what a era back then time stood still till Hendrix died

Gary

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
