Missing badge?

Hi everyone. Today I picked up this red sparkle kit off C.L. The snare looks like it may have had a badge at one time. The drums were advertized as a sixties Star kit. It has very simular lugs as the Stewart kit I bought last week. Although this kit came with a chrome snare, the Stewart kit had a luan snare shell. The wrap on this kit looks pretty good but there are a few issues. One of the toms has split in the wrap, I dont think that calls for a re-wrap job but I will need to figure out a repair for it. Back to my origional concern, anyone think that the snare had a round badge at one time? None of the other drums have badges, wouldnt they all have the same badge if they were origionaly sold as a kit?

I have become addicted to drum hunting and restoring ,since June I have found and purchased a 1967 Ludwig club date with jazz fest snare SBP. A Stewart auqa sparkle color 1960s kit and now this red sparkle, no name mij kit. Oh and a couple of snare drums also. I plan to bring all of these kits back to life and then, well, keep, sell, I dont know! tHANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS RESPONDED TO MY POST, YOU ALL HAVE BEEN VERY HELPFUL AND I APPRECIATE IT VERY MUCH.

Thank you!

On the snare drum yes it would be true that you are missing a round badge. But i don't think it would be a Star badge made of metal..Why i see glue or sticky tape that would have hold on a Sticker badge...Most likey one of 40 or so names that Star used on their drums...Same is true as far as the bass drum and toms Sticker badge's.These types of badges could have been at the air grommet hole or across on the drum from that...Also your snare drum could have been added to the set at a later time..The lugs don't match the others on the other drums...Mikey

In the very first moment I thought: clearly a Star's snare drum.

But Mikey777 may be right.

Then I noticed that the 'print' of the badge is not exactly centered and also the grommet is in place - normally it will not be replaced if the badge was taken away. So I don't think any more that it's a Star drum.

Alright you guys-if that's a Star snare, why does it have the exact same throw and exact same ridges as my circa 1970 Pearl snare with a badge and diamond lugs.I think it's Pearl made.Even the rims have the round ends where the tension rods go through, unlike Star which has flats more like Ludwig. And a Star set, which very often has the 1/4-20 threaded tension rods.

Teverson-sr,

Neither Mikey777 nor me claimed that the snare drum is a Star made one ...!

What ever it is, it is heavy. It is not cob, a refrigerator magnent will stick to it. I also noticed the round glue line was not centered over the vent hole. Makes you wonder is some kid had a cute sticker over the hole at one time. The drum is in excellent condition, this was a steel. The seller gave me a deal I just couldnt pass up.

I thought that the lugs did match the kit, they were just longer because they are for a snare drum. I will have to look closer today. Had to glue up a cabinet last night after getting home and didnt have much time to look close.

Thanks again!

Thank you!

Sorry if I came off a bit snippy......I'd like to pose a question to the professionals here. The red sparkle drums pictured don't match any Star or Pearl pictures I see here on the catalog pages. The early ones almost all have Slingy clone lugs or Sonor clones. These MIJ's are fairly common.Large 1/4-20 threaded bass lugs, spurs unlike either Star or Pearl cataloged pictures.Very thin shells with three rings on the bass drum. Were Star stencils/unbadged drums mechanically exclusive from actual Star drums? In other words, totally different besides the shells?I have alot of these lugs from a destroyed set I disassembled about 25 years ago.

Looks like a Pearl snare to me, too. Pearl strainer, Pearl style adjustment knobs, Pearl style Soundking copy lugs, and Pearl shell.

I think the missing round badge was likely original. Could have been one of the round Revelle badges, or something similar.

This is getting interesting. Is there anything else I can do to help like, post more pictures of the snare drum or the other drums. It does say made in japan on the throw handle.

Thank you!

First i never said that the snare was a Star made drum..I will say what i think on all the drums posted..The snare is made by Pearl SOLD under about 50 or so names, the lugs and strainer on the snare can be also found on about as many names.I would also say if he would remove one of the lugs it would likey say PEARL on the inside...Now on to the drums these are also made by Pearl sold under about 50 or so names.Pearl made sets not ownly useing the lugs you are talking about Slingy copys and the lugs you see along with other lugs too..Pearl never used the 60's Sonor copy lugs Star did..I would also say that all the drums had sticker badges on them at one time most likey they were silver in color with black letters....Mikey
