Mini Kit Last viewed: 8 hours ago

I played gig last night using this minimal set-up.

This was for the opening of an art show so we were asked to play an "acoustic" set...by which they meant "quieter".

So this is what I brought:

This 9x16 mystery snare with kick riser and clamp on spurs for a bass drum. Has a calf head on the front and Aquarian American Vintage with a clamp on muffler on the batter side. Got a nice little thump out of it.

Late 1930's, early 40's 6.5 x 14 Slingerland Universal Snare.

13" non-vintage Remo Pandeiro (hiding behind the cymbal here)

18" non-vintage Giant Beat multi

12oz Aluminum Can Schaefer Beer

Tambourine, shaker, sizzle chain, wallet etc.

Was a nice little kit to play.

Anyone else use setups like this often for coffee shops and such?

I'd love to see what others are doing with a minimal rig.

(not the best photo, I know)

I just threw together something similar a couple of weeks ago for a friend's party. Sounds good and is fun to play.

18" Carlton Tenor drum (orig calf reso and an old plastic batter) with cowbell holders for spurs.

14" Premier marching snare converted to a floor tom

and add whatever snare and cymbals.

Wow, that Slingerland snare is gorgeous! How does it sound?

The Slingerland sounds incredible. Warm, deep and open. Very resonant.

It has a newer Gold Tone calf head. And 12 strand Pure Sound concert wires.

Predictably has a ply delamination issue. But after consulting with my local drum builders I'm not touching it for now. The tone is so good, we determined a "repair" might ruin it. I just have to take a little care and keep an eye on the ply.

Carter,

That is a cool kit and I have to agree, that snare drum looks excellent.

Fayray, you are killing me with those Lokfast stands man! So great.

the delamination problem is an easy fix, have performed this on hundreds of Slingerland drums. It always improves the drum and never have I had it be detrimental to the sound of the drum. But as long as it isn't a bad problem doesn't effect the drum the call is most certainly yours.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Fayray -- Love that kit! Really cool pairing. I'd like to find an odd 13 or 14 tom to round mine out on the floor. Brilliant use of the cowbell mounts too!

Thanks Poppies and tnsquint

And yeah vintagemore, I know its not such a tough one, but figured I'd keep a watchful eye on this one. If it gets worse, I'll put it under the knife, glue and clamp. But for now it sounds like a dream and doesn't seem to be deteriorating.

Thanks Carter. I use the FT a lot when I play so had to have one.

tnsquint - sorry about the gratuitous use of Lokfast hardware:) I love it. I really want another couple of cymbal stands but they sell for pretty strong$$ these days.
