MIJ snares and other micscellany

1) Silver Sparkle Aria (Pearl stencil) 6 ply

Edges are double 45^ and have been smoothed with 220, contour is original, only kissed the edges to enhance tuning. It worked. No longer is this snare flat and uninspiring. Cleaned the interior up with a quick sanding, nothing major, just closing the grain. This technique is what makes my snares sound like they are supposed to, snare drums, not a tom that has had wires taped to it. There is a small spot of rash under the butt plate from a small cymbal arm that held a splash, presumably. Other than that, the wrap is clean, smooth a bright, no noticable fade. This is 8.5/10, new batter, cleaned and lubed. Snare side is original, has a few small holes that have been taped. Since it tunes up and plays very nicely, I see no reason to replace it at this time. 2) Fibre Gold Majestic (Star stencil) 3 ply w/re-rings

Complete, major overhaul, basketcase. Came as a shell with lugs, butt plate and wrap. Two extra holes from a non-original strainer at some point, but has a correct Star strainer in place. Wrap had an invisible micro-fracture that snapped clean upon removla for detail work. Under the wrap is white paint, used on many drums to accentuate the wrap color, this one had mildewed or otherwise gotten some type of mold on the paint. I stripped of the wrap, sanded and re-painted the shell, cleaned the wrap and replaced it. Where the break occured I used just enough epoxy to hold it fast to the shell but also not too much to prevent it from ever beiing removed safely. Edges are roundover, factory perfect, sanded to 220 grit. There were no snare beds, so I had to add them to eliminate sympathic snare buzz and increase sensitivity. Interior sanded and lacquered, including the edges.

6 Type "A" sound king lugs with cotton wrapped springs. Hoops are original as far as I know, minor pitting and a very small amount of rust was removed. New "Snappy Snares", Asian, that work wonderfully with this set up. Tunes easily and has a good range. Low, smoky and woodie, to almost field drum highs, which is a feat for a 3 ply, 6 lug MIJ snare drum.

Very hard to come by Fibre Gold snare to complete that kit, and I happen to have the only one around. The badge can be one of the following: Majestic (original) aluminum/black ink "Majestic Semi-Pro", "Apollo", "Lyra", "Sorento" black/brass typical Star stencil badges.

This drum now is very playable, and will make the perfect snare to complete any Fibre Gold project, and as an added bonus, it has been restored by the master.

3) 8 x12 11/16" T-rods, single tension???

Clean, straight and almost perfect. I see no pitting, rust or other problems. No other info available, what brand, nothing.

$15.00+shipping

4) 20" MIJ hoop, "Rootbeer Swirl"???

Inlay in good condition, hoop is a little chewed up, but again, it is 40+ years old and looks to have been the batter side hoop. A "chunk", or rather more like a lot of wood has worn away due to severe pedal rash/improper attachment. Good for batter side, could be rebuilt, if you wanted, I could maybe performn this miracle.

Bug away! I don't advocate radical changes to the edges, but I can certainly teach you how to milk them, if you understand the wood and the principles of soundwaves and sonic prssure on heads...and any other B/S I can come up with...

So if anyone wants to know why my prices seem out of line, I do not simply re-sell bad sounding drums. If you listen to a factory issue MIJ snare, you will immediately understand why many people despise them. However, when properly restored and repaired, rather rebuilt, they sound much different. In order to get an idea of the difference, it is like tuning up a car that has 150,000 miles and has never had new plugs or filters. It is the difference between night and day.

I would not pay these prices for factory original snares. I would once they have been reworked and made playable.

Sheesh, Jonni. I think your prices are very appropriate considering the work you put into them.
