I have the opportunity to buy this five piece Pencrest drum set for $233 (total with shipping). The shells are not the typical brittle shells with re-enforcement rings and the snare looks intriguing. Thoughts please.

Looks like a Pearl stencil kit...with the better "battleship" lugs! I've heard that Pencrest sold through JC Penney. The snare drum looks pretty cool, too! Your total price seems fair to me. Are the tom mounts included?

I am told that the tom mounts are included. Any idea on the snare? I have not seen anything like it.
Thanks,
The price is Great
I have never seen a Japanese snare shell like that
The lugs yes,but no, not the shell
it seems to be inspired in some small part by a Ludwig Acro at least in appearance
If I were you, I would be snagging that up fast, not only for the good kit, good price, but that snare! Holy Crow - when a couple of MIJ Vintage Drum Guru's have never seen an MIJ (Pearl) snare with a shell like that......that HAS to be very rare. Could just be steel with no chrome, but intriguing if about what metal that is!
The snare has been sprayed... It will be the standard MIJ steel shell... but can see at least one die cast rim there... and the already 50 year old luan shells appear to be still looking decent... So not a bad deal for a real rarity...
Cheers
John

what do you mean by the better battleship lugs?
For the price with shipping this is a great deal. Shells inside and out look to be in really great shape. That snare I have seen ( albeit very few times ) But I've seen it with a Tempro badge and a Majestic Badge. But certainly on the rare side of the 60's MIJ snare drums.
That's a fair price for that set. Make sure the tom mount is included. The 2-into-1 hex rod mount was only made for a short time, then switching to the common 2-hole mount. I had a similar era set with white leatherette wrap that sounded very good with Aquarian Studio-X heads. But I mounted the tom off the set with a clamp.
