Did those early MIJ kits come tightly wrapped with loads of glue or was it the opposite, and little glue was used to cut corners? I,d like to strip an old Yammie wrap but am not sure if it would be easier said than done.

Many of those kits had a wrap that was only taped on. Not sure about Yamaha however. Regardless, a heat gun and putty knife. If it is glued on the entire surface, then just take your time. Also note that many of the older wraps are flammable so do this outside, keep a very wet towel available and take your time. Odds are this will be a really simple process for you.
