MIJ Kit

Loading...

Hello all, my name is Trevor. I'm new to the forum. I've been out of the drum world since 98. I just recently purchased a MIJ Stewart kit. I'm told from the previous owner its an early 70's and now the third owner. From the research I've done on here, i believe it's a Star kit in accordance with the lugs and tom mount system. High toms are 12",13"

(6 lug), floor tom 16" (8 lug), kick is 20" (8 lug) and snare 14" (8 lug). Any input would be great.

Thanks, Trev

HY Trevor;-)

The Lugs look more like Hoshino...the tom mount was used on Drumate kits wich is Star ...but for me it`s Hoshino! We will see what the other fellows say:-)

regards

Thanks, Christian. Forgot mention its a 5 ply shell with no rings if that helps date it.

Sorry guys - I believe that the leg and cymbal mounting reveals that this is a Pearl made kit. 70s seems right to me. In addition - the one armed bolt on the cymbal mount (imitating Premier) indicates it is Pearl. I once had an unbadged kit with the classic Pearl Diamond lugs - with that 1 arm bolt.

The fact that there are no rings indicate that this was post 67, confirming the dating.

Make sure the edges are good - tune to the shell's pitch - and it will sound great (provided you are using good heads).

Thanks John. There is an actual edge on the bearing edge and no delamination. The kit is in really good shape for its age. Skins on it are Evans 360 G2 coated over G1 clear, hazy 300 snare and kick is Emad coated over EQ1.

If you really want to get a great sound out of it, cut a double 45 on those edges and grab an isolation mount for that rack tom. You won't believe your ears. Set up correctly, those drums are far better than most people are willing to admit. I think John would be the first to confirm that.

Confirmed.

You guys might really appreciate this article - despite that this is a case of a different shell composition.
