MIJ drum kit

Loading...

I need help identifying this MIJ drum kit I just purchased. They were listed as a 1962 Star kit. But when I went to look at them they look like a 60's Crown set. There were no badges or markings on the anything so I can't be sure. The lugs and hoops are all in really great shape. All but the snare heads need replacing. Even with this and a port cut in the front bass head they sound great. They appear to have been re-wrapped and there are spots on the Tom and Bass where the silver sparkle is torn and you can see what looks like blue metal flake beneath. Looking at the tone controls on the snare it looks just like the Crown image posted on the forum. I've included some pictures and will post some more.

I would appreciate any help you all can give me to identify them. Once thats done I am going to start restoring them.

Thanks

Dave C.

Hey Dave; From what I can see in your pics, the t-rods, and lugs on the rack tom and bass drum appear to be Hoshino, (*not the Star/Tama Hoshino) and it appears that the floor tom is different make. Suggest that the kit may have been re-wrapped to make some orphans match for a kit. What are shell interiors like? Floor tom leg bracket looks like Ludwig - any insignia on them?

All,

The Snare lugs look like a copy of early Slingerlands. Beavertails. The spacing on the lug holes is 1-3/4" The Snare wood is in good shape but could use a little care.

Under the poorly applied silver sparkle wrap is a factory blue wrap. This is true of the Bass, Snare and mounted Tom.

The flloor Tom has been added and it to is MIJ. Its hardware sugests it is a Ludwig copy. There is no markings on any of the hardware except the Stariner that simply reads Japan.

Despite its appearence the set has a really nice sound the snare is ecspecially sharp with a short loud crack.

I thought I'd just try and find some "Made in Japan" badges to stick on them or maybe none. Thanks Daddy Nowhere for the clues on this sets origins.

Like I said before no matter the origion I plan to clean the set up and play it.
