MIJ Bass drum tom mount help

Loading...

Hi to all in the Forum,

Several of you have helped me with my projects of rebuilding drum kits for our local schools to use at no charge. I need to see if anyone may have the last piece of the puzzle to my current one.

I’m working on an old MIJ kit ( no tags so unsure of the manufacture) This kit sat up in the schools rafters for years before they even remembered it was there. It’s a 20” bass 13” and 16” tom and a matching snare a perfect size for these students (middle school band). They are going to use this as a practice set. It was in really bad shape but I have been able to rebuild the drums and snare, put on new heads, and repair all the hardware I could.

(Still need a really inexpensive high hat stand or one I can repair if anyone has one of those available), I got a good deal on the high hats and ride cymbal. The one item that I cannot find is a bass drum mount that holds the tom. It was missing from the drum. It appears to be similar to the old Ludwig tube rail mount . I have attached a picture of the tom bracket if it might be helpful to ID. I’ve tried over the last couple of months to bid on several on EBAY but lost out. I’m donating all these parts so I only have a small budget to work with. Checked with Bill and a couple of others from the forum but no one has anything like this at the moment. I can switch out the tom mount with a different style but I really don’t want to drill a huge hole in the bass drum for a tube if I don’t need to. They make tom mounts for cymbal stands but by the time I buy the stand and hardware I’m way out of my budget range. If anyone has any ideals on a mounting method that would work or have any kind of brackets that might work please PM me.

The school season is coming up soon and I would like to have this completed for them.

I’m not looking for a freebe on these parts. I just need to find something that would work in the budget I have. I’m willing to rebuild the parts and they don’t need to be pretty. I will of course make sure you are included in the “Thanks To” when the kit is returned in the fall. I have done these projects for many years and please believe me when I say how much these kits are appreciated. I would also suggest that if any of you have either a kit that’s not being used anymore or time to repair one to contact your local school and offer it or your time to them. Music programs are getting cut at a record rate because of the economy. They truly appreciate any help and you will be rewarded with a very good feeling that no amount of money can buy!

All the Best!

Hi DownTown Farmer,

Thanks for offering the part! especially at no cost!

The item that I actually need is the part that holds this part when it's mounted on the tom to the bass drum and allows you to adjust it .Sorry I explained it so badly. Its heck getting old!!! I'm going to try and put a picture up on one that I had bid and lost on .I can supply a better picture if anyone needs one but its bigger than I can post so I will have to send it as a PM .Thanks again to everyone on this great forum for all your help and support.

All the Best!!

Thanks Mitch for the reply and the photo!

I actuality need everything except the part that mounts on the tom (Plate? the part you where kind enough to offer.)

I know I'm searching for a needle in a haystack but stranger things have happened !

If anyone has any other ideals that would cause the least amount of damage to the shell please let me know. I was going to use a snare stand on the tom but it puts the tom out a little to far for the young students to reach.(middle school age). That's why I was looking for something like the original .It seemed to offer the most flexibility .I hope to find an answer to this and the Hi Hat stand and get this back to them before school starts. They are really excited about being able to use it. It,s a pretty kit with a matching wood snare, in the old Slingerland (I believe) blue swirl agate and its cleaning up well.I purchased some old but decent Paiste cymbals and a good bass drum pedal to round it out . Thanks again to everyone who has taken time to help with this. All of you make me glad to be a part of this community!

I would suggest trying to use a snare stand. You can adjust a snare stand in a way that positions it on the inside of the bass drum spur and gets it right up close to the snare drum. I love the old MIJ drums, but I've found that the tom mounting systems to be difficult to adjust, not very reliable when it is in place, and can choke the sound of the tom. Others have found a way to use them successfully, but I got tired of messing with them and just went to a stand. For me, a snare stand allows the tom to sound better and are easier to deal with. But again, others, like Ralf on this forum, have found a way to make the original mounts useable.

It looks like you have a Star drum set, based on the picture of your tom mounting bracket. So if you decide to persue the bass drum rail mount, the Star rail would be the one to look for.

Best of luck on your project. Please post some pictures before you let the kids at it!

@ Dad Roadie - Where are you located, first off? Members here from all over the planet, and postage will definitely vary. These old MIJ kits often came with rail/consolette mounts, but there are several variations. How many holes in the bass drum from original mount, and what distance apart are the holes? Pictures are always good, especially to try and track down authentic replacement parts. Not sure if there is a difference in actual spade dimensions, but I do believe I have had issue with some not fitting in the past, so perhaps try to measure the slot as well.

I would agree that a snare stand is probably your best bet. The MIJ mounting hardware is flimsy at best. Couple that with middle school students who may bash away in an over-enthusiastic fashion and will most certainly over tighten any piece of hardware that they come in contact with and you have a recipe for failure. That was, in fact the fate of many of these kits in their prime.

Hi DaddyNowhere and All,

In answer to your questions the mounting holes are one on each side with a distance of 4 1/4" between the two centers. (see photo). I live in the Chicago area but please understand I'm not looking for freebes. I know everything cost money these days and I'm willing to buy the parts and pay for the shipping. The problem is first finding something that will work and second getting it at a price that wont kill my families budget. I will use the snare stand ideal as a last resort but when this ideal was tried with the schools other kit the students (1st year)had difficultly to the point that I got the parts needed to repair the stripped mounting holes on their main kit , a Yamaha . Thanks again to everyone for taking time to help me with this!

Hello,

What you are looking for is this one:

Distance is exactly 4 1/4 ", as you mentioned. The tom bracket in your pic is a typical one for STAR made drumsets.

Unfortunately, I'm living on the other side of the pond. I'd sell the rail consolette for EUR 10 (special price) plus shipment per letter to the US EUR 7.00. If you prefer to have a registered mail, the shipment charges are EUR 9.00. PayPal is fine.

Ralf

NB: only in this case I'm willing to sell it for EUR 10. Normal price for other members would be EUR 25.00
