Mid 60's BDP Slingerlands Last viewed: 1 day ago

So I scored these drums at a pawn shop last week. Pretty good buy I think in spite of some wrap issues on the FT and bearing edge issues on the BD (not surprising considering that it's been exposed for who knows how long. The Floor tom and 12" have 1965 date stamps, and the serial and interior on the bass drum are consistent with that. The 13" on the other hand has chocolate milk interiors and a 67-ish serial number.

The bass drum is drilled for a rail consolette and later had a set-omatic double mount added, so I think that it's a very safe assumption that this originally sold as a 12/16/20 and the 13 was added later. Given that fact and that I'm a 4 piece guy to begin with, I'm planning to sell the 13" to recoup some of my (admittedly modest) sales cost, and then gig the 12/16/20. The 13 is also by far the best condition of the three drums, and I'm soliciting opinions on how much to ask/expect on a sale of that drum (again the 9x13 tom - circa 67/8)

pictures coming in a second (Just remembered that vdf prefers pictures hosted here instead of img code links).

This is the kit set up 13/16/20 and then some detail shots of the 13"

Forgot to mention that the kit came with a WFL snare stand.

Apologies for the orientation of the photos

Looking good! If you end up selling any of it I am absolutely interested. Even if its just the 13 tom. Let me know! :)

Two pictures with all the drums set up and then, just to be fair, a picture of some of the damage to the wrap on the floor Tom. I received one proper bass drum hoop and put it on yesterday (you can see that the drum came with a stick saver that isn't big enough for a bass drum head) but discovered that some of the tension rods I have are slightly too short. My only goal for this is to be a player's kit, so the rods don't have to match, but they do have to work. Need to maybe switch some out with another drum and go by some key rather than t rods as well.

Looks like the pre set-o-matic double tom holder. Correct for '65. Original '65 floor tom legs are straight with push button mounts. Neat kit.

The floor tom brackets are ludwig. Legs might be as well. The tom mount might be period correct, but it's not original as the holes from the console are present.

Nice kit... lucky guy...

The 12/16/20 look to be Mahogany/poplar/mahogany shells...

that would make them even slightly earlier production...

Cheers

John

The two toms are "maplier" looking than the bass drum and have 1965 date stamps. The bass drum has a 62xxx serial number so it is almost certainly Maple era, and the grain looks more like maple up close, so I think that it is just discolored.

I got a working set of rods, 1 hoop and a 20" EMAD (it's what I had lying around) on it today, and it sounds good even one-headed. Should be getting a second hoop this week. For the time being I'm just going to put that Ebony pinstripe back on the res side, since I don't want to spend any more money on these until my current project has some paying gigs on the books, but in the long run I'm thinking either Evans Calftone EQ4 or Aquarian Modern Vintage with felt. I really like the 12mil weight of the Calftones, even more than I like the "calf" simulation (to whatever it extent it works on that front).

I like the tone of a tight head and the 12mil weight obviously produces a lower pitch with any given tightness.

thought I'd bump this, since I now have this guy up and running at 13/16/20. I was pretty convinced I was going to sell the 13" as it was a later add-on, but man what an under-rated combo those sizes make (especially if you are on the short side - which at 5'6" I most definitely am. So keeping the whole thing (selling off a bunch of miscellaneous parts and hardware instead) Managed to get one natural finish hoop cheap, and another with an inlay cut-out (painted silver), and finally put on a good looking head on the resonant side. Next step in the short run is to paint these hoops black. In the long run is to find a second hoop with an inlay cut and go black with BDP inlay on both sides.
