Ive contacted remo via text wanting to order some slightly oversized heads to fit on a vintage radio king snare( me and that drum againDOH) they can do it but asked for measurements. Rather than take heads of the drum I just measured the inside diameter on the Aquarian American vintage head that fit fine. It was 14 1/4", hoop to hoop. Measuring on the drum reso side ( snare bed edge to snare bed edge) was the same. Out of interest I measured an old ambassador batter ( these fit very tight) and it seemed to be the same maybe just an indescernable bit smaller ( but just about the same) what to do? Could I just say 14 1/4" plus an extra 1/8" ?
Measuring for oversized heads
Did you try one of the newer Remo Ambassador heads? My guess is that they may be slightly larger than the older ones.
You might try to take your drum to your local drum shop and try one out there.
The last time I had a new ambassador was about a year and a half ago and although it went on it was a wrestle. I just wanted a change from the darker sounding American vintage so a recently put an Evans level 360 on, thinking it might fit better but it was still very tight when it went on it had wrinkled at one side, but I have tensioned it out, I'm thinking that with the hoop being so tight on the shell it's probably impeding resonance as well. God why am I getting so anal! Someone has mentioned that the actual measurements seem pretty much the same between the oversized American vintage and all the standard heads but thinks it just slides on easier due to the straightness of the Mylar collar or something.
Yeah, that's a tough one. You're probably right on the resonance being affected with a tighter fitting head.
I have a snare that I re-wrapped; I put an Aquarian head on it and it was really tight. It sounded good though.
I put on a Remo head and it fit a lot better, (though I prefer Aquarian heads for snare drums in general).
If you order an over-sized head make sure it will still fit within your hoop!
Good luck.
I don't know much about this but there always seemes to be plenty of give between the head and hoop on this drum. So maybe I could just ask for it to be an eighth of an inch larger.
What about their new vintage head line? On my Radioking I use Evans, and haven't had any issues. Don't think I ever put a remo head on that one, so I can't say if I would have the same issue. But I would say if your heads are measuring in hoop to hoop at 14 1/4" ask for them to make it 14 1/2". Should fit better and the head should still fit within the rim. I think the 1/4 + 1/8 is .375.

Mr Tonkie. Don't know though still haven't a bloody clueCooked Egg remo only replied to my 1st initial text, they haven't replied to the next one when I gave the measurement. They said I would be ordering through any dealer I chose then they would price it up and it would take about 6 weeks. Thanks for reply anyway.
Archangel. Whose vintage line are you referring to.
Well if Remo doesn't end up getting back to you, give Evans a try. You could always measure a head before you bought any to see if It's the same size, and if so I bet they would be more on the ball with getting back to you and helping out. I do love Remo, but man the fact that Evans sent me free heads to replace the duds I bought is awesome. And they sent them yesterday and I got them today.
I don't generally advocate other forums, but you may want to post this dilemma over on the Pearl Drummers Forum. At the very least you'll catch the eye of the Evans rep who is a member. He might have some insight as to if any of their heads would work. Just make the title being something like " Heads won't fit - Remo,Evans,Aquarian " and he'll check it out.
