I suppose that, if your ears are offended by any little rattle from an internal tone control, you are probably driven mad from the presence of the springs in vintage drum lugs.
Yup. While it doesn’t drive me mad, spring ring can be particularly offensive when close micing in the studio. I have a 1938 Leedy Broadway whose springs would audibly reverberate and would cause the snares to buzz. I packed those lugs and problem solved. It’s one of my favorite snares for recording and comes to every session.
Not every internal muffler will buzz or come loose, but some will. I’ve just found the head chokes due to the muffler’s position and physics, and prefer to muffle from the outside when necessary.
