Maybe off-topic - mufflers on modern drum?

From leedybdp

I suppose that, if your ears are offended by any little rattle from an internal tone control, you are probably driven mad from the presence of the springs in vintage drum lugs.

Yup. While it doesn’t drive me mad, spring ring can be particularly offensive when close micing in the studio. I have a 1938 Leedy Broadway whose springs would audibly reverberate and would cause the snares to buzz. I packed those lugs and problem solved. It’s one of my favorite snares for recording and comes to every session.

Not every internal muffler will buzz or come loose, but some will. I’ve just found the head chokes due to the muffler’s position and physics, and prefer to muffle from the outside when necessary.

For newer snares without internal tone controls and for tome, I really like the Snareweight leather mufflers. DON'T get the metal, heavy things.

Just get the M1 or maybe the bigger version (good for floor toms). They clip on easy and are adjustable on the fly. They work great. I have them on most drums, including all my concert snares.

A good external muffler won't impede a rim shot if it's properly positioned. The Rogers external mufflers work very well and can be adjusted for as much or as little muffling as you desire.

Love em, that would fix your problem instantly and they look excellent even on modern DW's Cool Dude

I agree with Rob. Snareweights are a nice solution to overtones. Alternatively, you can look into a Big Fat Snare Drum or O-Rings. (Or just make your own O-rings by cutting out an O-shape from an old head.)

Or the old standby, toss your wallet on the thing.
