Max Roach Peacock Snare

The is a very cool & rare early Max Roach snare drum that I recently got from Steve Maxwell. The shell is a 3 ply shell with a date stamp of Sept 16, 1952. This drum is an early version of the snare with the Gladstone style tube lugs & was originally made with a Renown strainer & 2 point butt. The Max Roach name plate was missing but there a 2 small holes where the name plate was located. The owner who bought this drum installed a Micro sensitive strainer and a 4 point butt at some point in time, since the 4 point did not really belong & the drum already had a set of extra holes, I had the holes patched & plugged with Peacock Sparkle inlay that I had and installed a single point butt. I put an AMRAWCO calfskin snare side head on and an original early Gretsch permatone batter head and she looks great and sounds great too! A nice piece of Gretsch history. I also have a beautiful matching 22" 6 ply bass drum to go with this snare - now I need to find an original Peacock floor tom & tom tom - if there is one out there!

I just sold my later version of that snare to a fellow drummer brother in Canada. Those lugs that you've got make that a lot more desirable.

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

Backbeatkeeper I agree about those lugs, they are classy. I was thinking that this snare could have been made before they had the Micro strainer, since I would have expected it to have a Micro & a single point butt.

One of the few Gretsch snares I would actually jump at. It's a great little piccolo snare. I loved the sound of the Gretsch and the later issue Slingerland Buddy pics. Very cool snares. This one, though ... wow. This is WAY beyond "just a piccolo". This is a very special drum. Great find.
