I came across an old Slingerland bass shell thats made of masonite. Are these rare ?

They are slightly rare. Slingerland made some of these during the 50s as
an experiment. It didn't work out so they discontinued making them.

Just fyi... I owned a Remo kick which appeared to be made of masonite (or something very similar) and I have to say that it was the nicest sounding rock kick I've owned. I put a Pinstripe on the batter side and an Ebony (no port) on the reso side - It sounded HUGE!!
