Marching snare guys: could use your insight/advice

Loading...

Fortunate to have received a couple of marching snares from a school dumpster save. First time experience. First one cleaned up and ready to go to sale is a Keystone-badged blue sparkle snare with only a harness clip mod. Is there interest in these things since modern high-tension snares rule the marching crowd....Source of parts? Private small schools? Old-school community bands...if you've sold, what do marching snares typically fetch? I want to list a reasonable price but have no clue-heck, there aren't even many of this type on eBay, at least right now...

Too much info always welcomed. Dean

Those snares have their uses as any of the above.

$100 to 150 is a fair price.

These drums have an old school sound as the Kevlar sound is a bit too artificial.

A bit too artificial? What's artificial sounding about gnats tap dancing on a Formica table top?

I was fortunate to find a 1950s Leedy marching tymp-tom (12x16) that had been painted in black lacquer. It makes a great floor tom for my little set of Leedy orphans.

Super-exactly the help I needed and always thankful for your input. It's truly a privilege to be a member of this forum. Thanks guys. I have a soft spot in my heart for marching bands as I had been in one playing snare from junior high thru my college years. I love my Beatles and rock drumming, but the sounds playing in a good drum line really stirs my soul. Good to see that some of the big ones like the Texas Aggies and Ohio State to this day use traditional snares--no sound like it. Big, fat and DEEP!

leedybdp-thanks for sharing. Set looks good. Cool wrap. Is a matching snare in your future? If I had need, I would have no trouble converting and old marcher into a floor tom. D.

deansdrums59... Funny you should ask. By a quirk of fate, shortly after I wrapped those orphans in White 3-D Moire, a friend told me that he had just taken a Camco Tuxedo lug snare drum in on a trade. An hour later, that little snare became part of my little bop set consisting of that 12x16 floor tom, a 1940s Leedy 7x11 tom, and a 1950s Slingerland 16x16 floor tom converted to a bass drum. Leedy lugs perfectly fit the existing lug holes. Here you can see the original factory wrap on the snare drum next to the new wrap on the floor tom.
