Marble Cortex Last viewed: 17 minutes ago

A drumkit in a not often seen finish will come into my house next week.

I just bought a LUDWIG marble cortex kit (22-12-13-16), i got it for a good, fair price. I actually kind of like that finish and hope it will look good the way I imagine it (nicely polished up/white drumheads...) ;)

I had a post on a different Marble Cortex kit some time ago, and now this is only the maybe 4th one i have ever seen. I got some close up pics and it seems to be in good condition.

Some questions:

- what does "cortex" actually mean?

- how do I treat "Cortex finishes"? like a normal wrap and polish it with Novus for example? or will that harm the finish? should i just "clean it" instead?

- this might be an often asked question, but what's your head recommendation for those 1970s 6plys? i was thinking Powerstroke3 on the Kick + Ambassador (or also even P3) Reso, Emperor clear batters + Amb. Resos on the Toms... the sound should be Rock, but not too vintage, as I will use the Kit for a variety of Rock Music....

- or: if i would buy Ludwig heads, which ones should I use for the Toms (batter and reso)? Heavy? Medium?

I'll post more pics when i get the kit :D

Marble Cortex, 1978 Ludwig color swath, very nice . I play a Maple Cortex (Granitone interior) concert tom in my mix & match set. I've also played a Mahogany Cortex (Natural Maple interior) set. They sound great , & can be cleaned like any other wrap.

This from Wiki

"the outer layer of rock formed on the exterior of raw materials by chemical and mechanical weathering processes". From Latin "Cortex (Latin: "bark", "rind", "shell" or "husk")

It's a normal wrap that simulates (looks like) weathered rock or tree bark.

ok, so i will treat it with some Novus to make the cortex shine again... hope the HW looks fine, steel wool will do the trick on that....

Steel wool will scratch your hardware, even #0000. You might try white vinegar or some other non abrasive rust cutter/film remover. Your set is a unique beauty, take care. Good luck.

I normally only use #0000 steel wool on chrome surfaces (hoops and lugs, not shells) that have pitting or rust. if the chrome is dirty only, I use NEVR DULL, which works great!

I had a Mahogany cortex kit,the cortex is basically formica, and is tough as nails.

Glass plus or windex should clean the wrap up nicely for you.

Remember when using Ludwig heads, the single ply Heavy heads are basically remo ambassador thickness, med are diplomat thickness. I had a six ply kit,and I used amb clear or coated over clear amb resos and liked them.I used PS - 3 on kick batter with a variety of reso heads, and saw no reason to change the Batter head while I owned them.Other people like emp over amb for toms, never tried it but have heard other 6 plys sound good with it.If you are going for a modern rock sound I would try clear batters over clear amb or dip resos.

IMO and experience the 6 plys are really good rock drums, because they really shine in low to med tuning range

hey guys....

I received the kit and almost finished cleaning it. Window cleaner for the dirt and Novus for the polishing really did the trick, as well as the usual NEVRDULL and, yes, Steelwool for the chrome. It will look great!

Only thing left is putting new lacquer on the BD hoops, which are really worn.

BTW.: i was expecting a a 22-12-13-16 configuration, but i got a 24" Kick drum... sweet.. some really rocking drums...

I'll post pics as soon as i have completely finished the kit...
