Making a Slingerland eagle decal

Loading...

I've restored a lot of marching drums ( well over 100 do far) and I have seen many different drums by the larger companies and even some that may very well be one offs that have had different eagle decals on them. I even have a Slingerland with this same eagle. I have never been able to determine who produced them or had any luck finding existing reproductions so I wish you the best of luck with making one because it is most likely going to be the only way to replace the eagle. I will definitely be watching this.

CT - I have contacted a marching snare enthusiast. If anyone would know of a source for old stock decals, he does. Short of that, I'm still working on the Photoshop / Illustrator reproduction. I forgot to ask the dimensions of the decal.

I would like to find someone in Chicago that has one in very good condition so that I could photograph and measure it. I think it would also be helpful to see it in person.

Ludwig issued a drum with a similar but less dramatic decal. I think it may predate the Slingerland decal, but don't quote me on that:

I would like the same decal, but for it to read Americana....

Thats the type music I would be playing on a natural wood finish kit anyway....a la Levon Helm....

From Chicago Dave

CT - I have contacted a marching snare enthusiast. If anyone would know of a source for old stock decals, he does. Short of that, I'm still working on the Photoshop / Illustrator reproduction. I would love it if some found a source for these old stock stickers or someone that could reproduce them. It looks like Slingerland and Ludwig may have been tapping the same source for stickers at the same time. The badge on your drum looks like an early to mid 1930's Slingerland badge and I have had similar Slingerland drums with the same decal. However; this particular drum that I have on my shelf right now and thought was a Slingerland is actually a Ludwig drum and going by the tags and hardware, this drum would be be early / mid 1930's as well.

I also have an older 16" Ludwig & Ludwig snare with this gem on it as well. It is a much larger decal that is about 5.5" at its tallest and about 7.5" at the widest point. It's a pretty bad ass eagle.

One last one off of a completely unrelated drum. I would be very interested in getting this one reproduced if you find a source.

Sorry if this turned into a thread jack.

Very impressive collection. The old decals are hit or miss with quality. So much goes into the application of a water slide decal: dust, adhesive, moisture, air bubbles. And then you have all the time between production and preservation.

I know I have seen either a new old stock of your large eagle standing on the shield. They are available. I will post the link when I find it again. I may have seen the last one as well, or a close variation.

Today I completed the restoration work on the 14x10 Slingerland. I'll let the various lacquers and such cure overnight and then reassemble.

One of the features I love most about some single tension drums is that the tension rods are not fixed or anchored to the shell. I am going to add a couple of tension rods and make it ten (maybe eleven) lug rather than eight.

Just did some research. The hoops I'm using on my 14x10 Slingerland are from a 1900s Walberg & Auge Perfection snare. I got the hoops off Ebay ten years ago.

There is a code stamped on the underside of each hoop:

Batter hoop: IIIX 03318

Reso hoop: IIIIX 3318

Could be a date, or could be a mfg. number.

I found three images snagged from various sources that can be easily edited. They are not exactly what I've seen on old snares, but they carry the vibe pretty well.

Take out everything but the eagle, shield, and wreath:

This one, if reversed, closely resembles the Slingerland eagle. Keep the eagle & flag, remove the background:

I think this one might be a recent design trying to look old. The stars look goofy, and will be made more uniform:

I'll get to work and post the results this week or the next.

Here's one ready to print. There is no "America" sash, but that's ok. I think everyone will get the idea.
