Makin' My Own

First time I have actually done this myself. Since vintage 18" bass drums are relatively hard to come by and quite pricey when you find one....I took a Keller 5-ply maple shell I had kickin' around from a previous Keller shell pack I won on eFlay a while back....and decided to "vintage-ize" it myself.

Bought 4 bass hoops from aitwood.com. A pair for bass hoops...and the other 2 for reinforcing rings.

Cut the 2 hoops diagonally and kept taking of pieces until it slipped in nicely to hug the inside of the shell. Then I slid in a thin, thin tension shim at the seam of the 2 cuts, to make sure it had good contact to the shell interior. Used 19 clamps and carpenters glue to secure it there....sanded everything down level; filled the small seam at the cut with filler.

I just routed the edges this afternoon (pics to come). 45 degree bevel interior, with a roundover exterior. Came out friggin' great ! Real, true, old-skool thin-ply bass drum.

I am sanding the interior and edges down to 220gr and am gonna apply a coat of Tung Oil tonight, then wrap 'er up tom'w (Tangerine Glitter).

She is matching up with a 8x12" Slingy Rack and a 12x14" Slingy FT (previously a marching tenor drum) to make a nice little bop kit (custom job for a client).

Nice! Sounds like a job I'm working on myself at the moment. Since I have been unable to find ANYTHING as far as Leedy Conn-era floor toms, especially in the 16x18 size (I miraculously found a 16x16 on ebay, but have yet to see another!) I'm replicating my own out of one of Keller's vintage maple shells. Its a maple/poplar combo much like Leedy's and also Ludwig's shell makeup back then and has reinforcement hoops installed already. I have located all of the hardware and such that I will need, so once it all arrives the assembly will begin and....voila! One "Leedy" 16x18 floor tom!

You should post a pic of yours, too.

I think that's the way to go with rarer sizes. 14x14's are also gettin' nutz....used to be only the Rogers ones fetched crazy number$...but now the Luddy and Slingy ones are scraping $300-ish....

So, yes...you can build yourself.... or even just order one of those "vintage style" shells from Keller, Aitwood, or Precision Drum. Far cheaper and really just as nice.

OK, so a purist might say "but it's not a XXX"...And that is true; but the fact is...if you have the spec matched as closely to the original as you can...that's gonna be pretty damn close and the drum will perform as an original would (just don't badge it something it's not ~ I have had folks ask me to do that and I always say "no". I'll install the vintage hardware to match, sure. But no way am I gonna slap an old badge on a repro shell.....)

Jaye...you don't want to know what I've got into this one drum.....I don't think I do either LOL!, but to find an original is near impossible! If it was Ludwig, that would be different as I have spares galore! But being a Leedy...I'm a little out of my element, but I'm sure enjoying this project. When I'm done this will be a pretty cool kit......9x13, 16x16, 16x18, 14x26 and 5 1/2x14 Boradway snare. Call it a Krupa kit, call it a Buddy Rich kit, heck call it a Bonham kit if you like......just in a different brand that you don't see much of anymore. :D

Nice craftsmanship. Can't wait to see the finished unit.

Possible to throw up a pic of your router bit(s)?

Cheers!

"OK, so a purist might say "but it's not a XXX"..."

Hey Jaye,

That's exactly what I was saying on the "What's up w/floor tom prices" thread. Cool Dude Go ahead and make customs that match up to the vintage kit, but TELL people the truth about fill-in tubs, and for God's sake don't badge them.

People have been customizing cars for years, so I don't see any problem with customizing drums and let the purists be purists. I've seen some great shell packs with retro wrap jobs. I think customizing is a smart way to deal with hard-to-find and costly originals.

Currently working on a 7 piece virgin double bass 3 ply early 70's Ludwig kit to be wearing....MOD ORANGE.
