All this time we have been mis-identifying certain Star shells as "3ply". At the bottom right of this page in the Star catalog from 1972 the shell construction of this era of shells is identified as "9 ply compressed with hardwood rings". This is not to be confused with the earlier shells that are clearly thinner. These 9 ply shells are, from the best I can tell, ONLY the Star drums, not any of the stencils. If you have one of these kits, not the earlier kits, please take a moment to look closely at your bass and confirm this.

Hi Jonnistix,

My two STAR's (one in copper, the other in silver metallic) are out of this aera. Until now I thought it was some less then 9-ply, but it's a little bit difficult to count all layers exactly.

http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=6757

The shells (toms and bass drum) have a thickness of 8.5 mm plus further 8.5 mm for the re-rings, which have a width (or height?) of 25 mm. Shells are lacquered completely with a clear varnish. Inner layer (and others as well?) most probably maple.

BUT: my two bass drums do not (!) have a third re-ring in the middle of the shell.

Mine is too thin to be 9 ply and has the third (central) ring in the bass drum- this one's gotta be 3 ply. Thanks for info!

This catalog is the 1972 version, so it may be the ramp up period to the launch of TAMA. The very early TAMA kits, 74-76 ish seem to have this shell lay out, but they are few and far between these day. You just neve se any early 7s TAMA kits for sale.
