Majestic Snare

Loading...

Came by this 14x5 Majestic blue sparkle 8 lug snare with a fairly heavy ply shell, no re-rings. Badge says deluxe made in japan. I've cleaned it up and trued up the bearing edges. Sounds a little tinny with plenty of overtones. Any suggestions for getting the best sound out of one of these?

She's a 60's Pearl Stencil...no re-rings ? Is the shell interior grey ?

Those are the thicker-shelled versions of Pearl stencils. My Whitehalls are identical.

how far a change do you wanna make ?

Cheap: go for a dry-sounding snare head....such as a Remo Powerstroke 3 coated or an Aquarian Focus X coated. And use the internal muffler liberally.

More costly: recut the batter edge to a sharper profile...maybe a 45 degree with either no outside roundover or just a tiny outside roundover.

Next, sand down to 180-200gr smoothness. Then give the new edge 3-4 coats of Tung oil, light sanding 320 gr. paper after the second coat.

The Works: IF the interior isn't painted/stained, or IF you actually wanna sand the paint/stain off...

...then sand the interior down to about 180 gr. (it's vertical-grain luan, no need to sand furtehr down than that) and go with 3 coats of Tung oil.

Luan is an absorptive wood, very soft, open grain. You wanna tighten up/fill in the grain and make the interior surface more reflective, less absorptive...so the sound will rebound around in between the heads. This is why Tung works so well, it really hardens the surface in there.

All of this should reduce the ring and give the snare more bite.....

Whew....sorry you asked ???? DOH

And if you don't want to mess with it, PM me, I have a blue sparkle kit and a 6 lug snare, would make a nice add to mine. As it is the "Deluxe" model it almost certainly is luan. Mine doesn't have too much overtone, but then it was someguys gig set, and he put a very heavy head on it, Remo Falams II K-Series Super, looks like a marching head...it works.
