Majestic drums info for Newbie

Loading...

Hi all,

Brand new to the forum and to vintage drums. In fact, I'm a sax player who recently came across a set of Majestic drums and think I would like to clean them up for a granddaughter who shows an interest. My problem/questions are: will these make a good set for a ten-year-old beginner? What is missing from the set that I need to replace? Are there 'steps' to cleaning, especially the wood inside and the wrap? I've taken a few pics (hope I can upload them) and can take more. Thanks in advance for any advice/direction/info?[Attachment: 63575]

If you are looking at this from a purely financial standpoint, you'll be into the resto for about the same as buying a "Made in China" generic off C/L. Heads, rims, tension rods, snare and stand and a hihat stand just to start with. There are $150-$200 starter sets on C/l regularly. BUT...they certainly won't have the sophisticated kitschy vibe of a late 60's offset-lug Majestic "Semi-Pro". Or have that Blue Abalone Pearl wrap...

Nice looking, old kit. Have you purchased, or just considering? As teverson-sr was saying; this would indeed be a project, and perhaps not one worthy of a 10 year old's starter kit. Would work just fine, but would cost a few bucks, and some time to complete. Looks like some Ludwig hardware in the box, which is a bonus.

I agree with those above...that's one for the dedicated! As in, if those are 12/14/20 I could get dedicated to that, lol.

But for a starter kit, you can get something ready to go for cheap-ish.

Now I am a bit biased - and it will show........

My advice is to take this kit and dis-assemble it and pack it away (unless you also are a drummer). Then go buy a cheap modern kit for the 10 yr old.

Simply put - once this Majestic is cleaned up ('restored') it will be a much too good of a kit for the beginner. It will sound amazing (3-ply shell with re-rings sound the best) and obviously it will look amazing - as it already does to a point - cleaned and polished up, it will look amazing.

So, take it all apart, clean all the parts up - and wait until the she is older - and then present it as a gift. She will be blown away by it and it can be a very enjoyable project to assemble it together, when she is about - say 16 or so.

This way, that valuable find will be able to be treated with some respect once she has learned some (in the form of proper technique and care).

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

BTW - no implication that she knows no respect already!! What I mean is proper technique and care.

Also, I suggest soaking the hardware in Dawn/H2O (24-48 hrs) then brushing it up with a toothbrush - then polish/wax with Turtle Wax - "Chrome Polish and Rust Remover" which comes in the green bottle. Next, wash up the wrap (be careful not to get the wood wet) with dishsoap, then perhaps some polish on the wrap (several out there - Nexus is a popular choice). Be sure to label the parts.

If you need more advice on cleaning just post questions here. and BTW - NEVER use steel wool - no matter the grade - it scratches. When these 'scratches' are not visible - the damage is done in the form of making the parts DULL (micro-scratching is what I would call that). The soak and polish will work just fine - and the elbow grease is quite minimal. Be sure to do this before putting it away into storage - (in low humidity!).

Great advice John. You fell short of suggesting they be boxed and sent to me, but hey, great anyway!

Yeah - sorry it is called Novus. There are 3 of them - but I understand you only need like 2 of them. I will let others on here advise on that product as I have never used it. I use a 3M plastic polisher that was recommended by a guitarist who cleaned up a drumset - and his neighbor (who works in the auto industry) recommended it to him.

I would totally recommend it here and even provide a pic......if I could find the blasted stuff....somewhere around here!!!!! and in fact I have a snare shell calling for it.....
