This is the forum for info on MIJ gear hands down, but can you tell me if anything [drums] of quality came out of Taiwan, and when did drums start leaking out of there? I wonder if there are any hidden treasures with a MIT tag on it?Hmmmm
Made in Taiwan?...junk or what?
I got one in recently that surprised me. It had the remains of one badge left, I think it said 'Revelle' but I can't be sure. The vintage seems to be 70's. The hardware is all stamped 'Made In Taiwan'.
The quality is quite good really (for Asian drums).
Looks pretty much like my MIT Apollo kit I purchased in about 1980 (and still have). It has Apollo badges that are tacked onto the shell and some stickers that say Made In Taiwan. Hex tom arms. I don't think I would call them junk but the MIJ Apollo hardware sure seems to be more substantial. Maybe it's just sentiment, but my kit will never be for sale or trade.
FWIW, my kit was stolen in the 80's and voluntarily returned 20yrs later by a friend who confessed to the deed and asked forgiveness.
People are more valuable than drums (but just barely!)
White 70's Slingerland five piece
60's Ludwig WMP four piece
60's white satin flame MIJ Apollo five piece
70's red sparkle MIT Apollos five piece
I,d argue that.
Wow! Returned after 20 years. Amazing...
Yeah, this one has the hex tom arms as well, and they do seem a bit 'light'. They sound identical to MIJ drums of the early 70's though, so I figure they hadn't quite got around to the cheap crud that you see from the mid and late 80's (and presently).
