Lyra/Majestic MIJ Kit - Restoration

Thanks Jack! I used distilled white vinegar. After soaking for 24 hours, each part still needed a good scrub to remove the rust and the backs of the lug casings all needed the bits of copper colored contact paper scraped off. Afterward I dried everything with baking soda, but will likely skip that step going forward and just rinse with water and dry with a cloth instead.

I have had good luck with aluminum foil and water. I have also used Coke and foil, but the coke is messy.

I think I'm going to try aluminum and water on the bass drum claws; they seem to have the most rust (other than the lug washers inside the shell). I'll take before & after pics and post them here when I do.

While I was cleaning the glue off the snare wrap I came across an area that appears to have some damage. The wrap has raised rough spots which are very dull in this area. Does anyone know how to fix this? Would sanding with fine grit sandpaper (then polishing) work or would it mess it up further?

Pictures? Is it some left over adhesive? Something on top of the wrap, under the wrap?

I use aluminum foil and vinegar to get the best of both worlds!!

Looks to me like maybe the adhesive or some other substance bonded to the wrap somehow. It's not tacky; it feels like the vinyl when I run my hand over it, except that it's rough/bumpy, and discolored. I may have caused it when I tried using Goof Off last week...I thought I'd only used it on an inconspicuous spot on the 13" tom, but I can't remember if I tried it on the snare as well.

I ordered a Novus 3, 2, 1 bundle today which should be here Wednesday, I'm hoping that will help.

Update!

So yesterday I removed the contact paper from the bass drum. Upon closer inspection, this drum is in the worst shape of all of them (which isn't to say it's a loss; far from it).

First, there's about a 3-inch-long section where both the batter- and reso-side re-rings have separated from the shell. Once I clean the glue off the original wrap, that will be the first repair.

Next will be the large area of wrap that I accidentally pulled up when removing the contact paper near the seam (this is in addition to the small piece of wrap I broke off a couple weeks ago). The wrap split near the middle of the seam and peeled back about 6 inches (1st photo below). :( Fortunately, this should be fairly easy to repair, and again won't be visible as it's near the bottom of the drum.

Lastly, about 1/3 of the wrap's surface had some pretty drastic sun damage at some point, which could explain the decision to cover it in gold contact paper. It still sparkles a bit (through the glue), but the brilliant blue has darkened to a dull, bluish-grey (photos 2-4 below). You can even see that there once was a mounted cymbal L-arm, which apparently protected the wrap from the sun. Kinda cool.

Is there anything that might help restore the color of the wrap?

Edit: I forgot to mention that I broke the bass hoop inlay as soon as I started cleaning the residue from it. Not too heartbroken as it was looking pretty crappy, and it makes the decision to go with new wrap on both hoops (once I get a second one) a lot easier.

From drumfx

Guaranteed that under that mac-tack is the original sparkle finish....Blue? In a lot of cases, when people apply that stuff to the original finish, it actually preserves what is underneath. Take a peak by lifting a piece of the seam.

I was just gonna say the same thing ! Yes Sir

Great save going here. Is the wrap the same on both sides? On my 3 ring 20 inch bass of same era I just flipped the wrap. Only attached at the seam. Not everything lined up of course. But is better than before.

For the Goo Gone area it ate into the outer clear layer and maybe into the glitter. Start with a light buffing with a Magic Eraser pad and Novus #2 combination. Might help, won't hurt anything.

A good chrome polish and micro fiber towels should get the bass claws looking better. If not I could put them in my tumbler and that will get them good as they will get. I would go with wood hoops.

Wood filler for the "flea bites" on the bearing edges. Sand and beeswax. The luan has aged. Got a big smile out of how good my $75 red sparkle kit sounded after some love. Also, it has center re-ring on the 16" FT. Best I can tell Hoshino made.

Thanks for the pictures of your project.
