1+ Drummerjohn333. Have handled many different lugs from this era myself, and some are more similar than others. I believe OP's lugs are Pearl, though not the most common - have not come across these ones myself. More pics would definitely help to find accurate replacements - are bass, and floor tom both same size lugs?

Enclosed are more pictures.
Here are the last three.
Now the bass drum lug is significantly bigger than the tom lug.
Now, I bought a Gretsch style lug for the tom and the bass from Billy Blast Drums and it was close, but not exact. See link below

What one of the posters above suggested is that I re-lug the kit for about $25. I don't know where I could do the for that price. Heck, the Gretsch style lug cost $2.50 x 16 is a lot. I was thinking about putting the newer lugs in the bottom of the set where it isn't seen and moving the older ones to replace the broken ones.
I think I am getting to the point that I need a new(er) drum set.Ten years ago, I paid about $125 for the set. It had no lower hoops, no tom mount, though it had the rail mount. I replaced all those the parts, gosh, I must of invested over $100 above that in a Gibraltar mount, hoops, heads, lug nuts, etc. The set plays well. I play it about twice a week for a few hours. But now, I'm afraid to tighten the head because I may break another lug. The red sparkle laminate (not the drum) is cracked on one side of the floor tom. The set sounds good, I've put new heads on it. Has that very old school ringy sound to it. I was thinking about rewrapping it, but here is some questions.
- Am I right? Is it an early Pearl?
- If anyone has these lugs. How much would they cost? The one that broke were just from tightening.
- In your opinion, would it be worth it to re-wrap a more or less 45 year old MIF drum set. A drum wrap is $98 from Precision, not including the time.
Should I just get newer set? Yeah, it wont have the personality, but, I wont have all these issues.
If I sell the set. (Tom, Floor and Bass) What could I get for it?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Alex
Sounded to me like Ircollura was offering the 16 Gretsch style lugs for $25... If bass and floor tom lugs are different sizes that would only solve half your problem however. Hard to tell without pictures of whole kit, but I would stop and think before putting more $ into it. MIJ kits, though collectible, still do not command a great price, even in great original shape with a cool wrap. Did you drill for the new Gibraltar mount? This would also negatively affect the resale value. Do not re-wrap it - if wrap is in okay shape, just try to repair and clean. If you find lugs that don't match, yes move to bottom, or least visible area. I'd suggest that you replace missing parts as economically as possible, then list for sale, (don't expect much - eg. I sold a sweet Pearl/Coronet 4 piece, tigers eye pearl kit, complete, and original, in fantastic shape last year for $350.00) take what you can get for it, and put towards a newer kit, or maybe just make the repairs, and keep as a back-up kit. :2Cents:

conyo,
I recently bought a large lot of pieces and parts, including three boxes of lugs and lug casings. Many are MIJ. I have started sorting through them and putting them into groups. With your many pictures in hand, I will look in the boxes and let you know if I have any that match yours.
Are there any markings inside the lug casings under the springs - numbers or letters?

Wow, the amount of knowledge here is staggering. I mean that in the best sense.
Rick you are a genius. I took the spring out of the lug (see enclosed picture) and I now know for sure I own a late 60's Red Sparkle PEARL drumset.
To answer your question DaddyNowhere, I did not drill a new Gibraltar mount on the mounted tom, I actually spent $40 and got a PDP Rims type floating mount.
Unfortunately, since the bass was missing its bass drum spurs, I installed new ones which I had to drill holes for.
What I may do is exactly what you suggested. Get a newer kit and have that one as a backup.
Rick and Ircorulla, I am interested in the lugs. Let me know.
I appreciate all the help and advice.
Thanks again,
Alex
