lug lesson learned the hard way

Loading...

Last night I recieved a 1972 Slingerland 8"x12" tom that a friend asked me to clean up for him, well I set it on the coffee table and started loosening the rods not paying attention distracted by the nascar race on tv ,I gave one lug a good twist and bam the lug cracked in half,it looked fine on the outside but inside the bottom of the screw was rusted to the inside of the lug,I should of gotten the hint when he told me he thought the drum might of gotten wet a few times in his moms basement ! duh! from now on no matter how good an old drum looks,im gonna apply 3 in one or a light machine oil or something on the threads and let it soak down into the lug and if it still feels stuck, carefully unbolt the lug to try to inspect it . Ive been rehabbing all sorts of drums for years and never had this happen before ! well from now on better safe than sorry!

You never know what's goin' on inside. Fortunately, it's easily replaceable.
