Ludwig - what is this snare drum?

Loading...

Hi,

I'm new on this forum so please be kind ;)

I have a Ludwig snare drum i want to identify it, the year and the exact model? I search on the forum and i found some great informations but i want to be sure...

1. Diameters are - 5" x 14"

2. Badge - Blue Olive - cut! without serial numbers

3. 8 lugs

4. Hoops are steel (magnetic test)

5. Shell is not steel (magnetic test)

6. Inside there is a "AG" stamp (Anti-Galvanic) (according to post from "Ludwig-dude" - http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=9441) this is probably aluminum - but for sure? how to check if it is not brass or Ludalloy?

7. Strainer is P85 with 12 wholes

This is all information i have...from what i find on forum and internet is it Ludwig Acrolite?? Which year it can be? And from whch material the shell is made?

Thanks!

I think it`s a LM404 Acrolite with P-85 from 1991, listed in this cat.

From OddBall

I think it`s a LM404 Acrolite with P-85 from 1991, listed in this cat.

But what about the badge??? Blue Olive cut was only till 1979?

From http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/:

1.Blue and Olive Cut Badge - First in the line and was cut to fit on Drums with the center bead. (Supraphonics with this badge have shown up and they have been brass shells)

2.In 1971-‘72 Ludwig also used B & O Badges without Serial Numbers (LVDC)

3.Blue and Olive Cut Badge with rounded corners. This was on a Black Beauty Snare Drum from the late 70's

4.Started using this late 70's (1979) due to complaintes from the pointy badges above getting caught on things and bending.

My is for sure, sharped corner no.1

I'd say it's an early 70's 8 lug Supra most likely. I've got one as well, but mine has a full badge. There were some made. Mine was found with a Chrome over Vistalite kit. That shell was probably one that was intended for a keystone badge from the late 60's. The blue olive badge was cut to fit the shell properly. This was done in the very early '70 timeframe. Some cut badge drums were brass. These are usually 10 lug Supras and have a "B' stamped near the muffler.

Interesting snare to say the least. Possibly I can add a few things that may determine what you have.

A good guess is acrolite...but they never chromed the acro's...only the supraphonics. So with the AG stamped on the interior, this indeed was chromed during manufacturing, and not after the fact. The acro had bowtie lugs as well, and not the imperial lugs as shown. If someone changed them out later, there could possibly be some indentations/scratches where the outline of the bowtie lugs once were...but I do not see any in the photos provided.

With the 12 hole black face P-83, along with the cut badge (typical of the early 70's and not the later) makes me steer in the direction that it is right after the keystone badge era.

They indeed made an 8 lug supraphonic, and believe it was a short period of time in 1965, however have never seen anything past that time. It is possible that it slipped through, as was "suppose" to be an acrolite, but somehow went to chrome, with no one paying attention??

Very nice snare either way, and will await a few other theories to what they think.

Let me know if this one ever comes up for sale...would like to add it to my collection for sure. Can email me at surface.n@maplan.com if you would like to converse that way as well.

Guys thanks a lot for Your help! Im almost sure that is extremly rare 8 lug Supra from 1969...

I got some info from "Memphis Drum Shop" and "Classic Vintage Drums":

"Thank you for contacting us. That looks to be a 14x5 Ludwig Supraphonic Snare Drum (c.1969). Ludalloy Shell."

"...cool drum! Yes, I would agree that it is a Ludalloy 8-lug Supraphonic from the early B/O era, probably around 1969. Very rare! Thanks for sharing."
