Ludwig Universal Snare Last viewed: 3 hours ago

I picked up a Ludwig Universal snare drum that I believe is from the 1920's. I believe it is Nickel over Brass.

There is not a butt plate, but there are 2 strainers with knobs although 1 does not have a throwoff, but does have a knob.

I am pretty sure the complete strainer is not original as there are 2 small holes in the batter hoop and there are 2 extra holes below the bottom of the strainer.

I am not sure if it is worth trying to find the original style strainer or not. It would be nice to complete the drum with the original strainer to fill in the holes, but I am not going to worry if I don't find one. I would like to find an original butt plate though and remove the other strainer without the throw off mechanism.

Does anyone have a great method/product to clean up and shine nickel?

Attached are some pictures.

I love the look of these older metal snares. A member who knows more than me (perclee) suggested Cape Cod Polishing cloths for the metal work on my wood Walberg and Auge marching snare. I found them at my local hardware store. They worked very well, but I have no idea if they are appropriate for full metal drums.

Great find, keep us posted. I'd like to see how that one cleans up.

Looks like a Gretsch strainer in pic 2 to me.

Thanks AutoPilot and Kevin.

It is missing 3 hoop clips so I plan on ordering those, heads, snare wires and a butt plate so I can get it up and running.

Any suggestions for snare wires? I was thinking 16 strand Puresound wires.

This is my first NOB brass. It is a 2 piece drum and is heavier than I expected. I had a brass Leedy Reliance snare that I just sold 2 weeks ago, but the NOB seems much heavier to me, obviously due to the nickel.

I had been keeping an eye out for an 8 lug drum COB or NOB snare, but won this on ebay for $82, which is basically the price of an Acrolite, so I figured I would give the 6 lugger a shot to see what it was like.

ConvertedLudwigPLayer - Maybe you already know that it is likely a 1924 to 1928 Universal model with the knob tensioner and no throw-off. As seen in the catalogue here: http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/ludwig_snaredrums/1924-ludwig-snare-drums-7.jpg Based on catalogues, only 4 years of this edition of the Universal model.

Hi 510,

I was thinking it was a late 1920's era with that style strainer that had been swapped out at some point.

Would it also have had a 2nd knob tensioner where a butt plate would go on a more modern snare then as well?

Do you have any pictures of what would have held the snare wires in place on the other side of the drum?

Thanks!!!

ConvertedLudwigPLayer - According to the catalogues Ludwig stopped offering the Universal model from 1929 until they reintroduced it in 1933 but with the P338 strainer system replacing the type your drum had. As you can see in the catalogue photos the original strainer for your snare had a part with 2 screws on the hoop and the bottom part of it had 2 screws through the shell below the center bead. Sorry, I don’t know what type of butt plate it had, although I suspect it was probably a standard style (2 screw clamp and 2 screws to mount) and not a special one as you mention with a knob. I’m sure Folks here who have one like yours will come through with the info on the correct butt plate.

Thanks 510. I really apprecaite it your help and insight.

I will clean it up in the next few days in anticipation of the following things I ordered:

Ludwig butt plate, reso head, sanre wires, tension rods and some clips.

I will post some pics once it is all together.

Hey, got one just like it.

The strainer is a Tango and the butt plate is one piece, kinda looks like a shelf with twelve holes in it.
