Ludwig Tom Mount Question

Loading...

Hi folks, I picked up a Ludwig Tom a while ago and just now getting around to cleaning it up. The drum came with a diamond rail mount bracket. When I removed it I found that there was also another hole in the middle drilled for the more common rail mount. All of the holes are clean and the fade on the wrap shows that the diamond bracket was on the drum most or all of its life. There is no sign of the rail bracket ever being installed other than the extra hole. Does anyone knows if all of these holes were drilled at the factory? Thanks for your help.

I don't see how that extra hole could be factory. Someone at one point in time decided it needed a newer type of mount on the tom; at least it's covered by the original.

I don't understand, what type of newer mount are you thinking of with just one screw?

What is the hole spacing from the original bottom hole to the one in the center? Someone probably drilled that hole to install a Ludwig Classic mount. Not an uncommon modification.

No no, a common 1960’s Atlas bracket would use the existing bottom hole and require the one extra hole in the center.

Thanks everyone. The tom is from 1964, just around the time they were phasing out the diamond brackets. So maybe the shell was in stock and already drilled for an Atlas mount, but they needed to fill an order with the diamond bracket and added the other three holes after the fact? There is no evidence that a two hole Atlas bracket was installed other than the extra hole. No fading or indents in the wrap, which is why I asked. It doesn’t really matter, but I’m going to list it and want to be forthcoming with a potential buyer.

From thin shell

It appears as if the bottom hole and the center hole are on-center of the shell. The other holes (supposedly the diamond mount holes) are off center. So, I would think that the original holes are there for a classic, L-arm mount and then someone drilled some extra holes to fit a diamond clip-mount plate...I don't understand who would have wanted to do that, but....Maybe ATeam's theory is correct.

Is there any evidence on the inside of the shell that something was screwed down at the center hole?

Just so you know the correct nomenclature, the die cast tom mount is not referred to as the Atlas mount. Atlas was the name for the heavy duty stands introduced in the 70's. Not to be confused with the hardware and isolation mounts they make today. The most common name for the die cast mount is the Classic Mount which is the name Ludwig currently uses.

No evidence of the center hole ever being used from the inside of the shell either. The diamond bracket has a plate for the inside and there are no marks other than the diamond shaped shadow on the paint. And whoever drilled the holes did a very clean job, which is why I asked if it was done at the factory. Thanks everyone for your input.
