Ludwig Super Sensitive

Loading...

For more years than I care to remember I have been looking for a 1920s Ludwig Super Sensitive snare. One of those with the lovely heavy 2-piece shells. Over that period I have seen several come and go on eBay and elsewhere but usually, they're absurdly expensive or have parts missing or damage. It became a bit of a quest - rather like the Holy Grail! Thanks, however, the time and effort of a fellow forum member, I have been able to at last to realise my dream and now am the proud owner of a late 1920s 5" x 14" Super Sensitive Dual snare. It arrived in New Zealand after it's transglobal journey in perfect condition and after a clean and polish now sits proudly behind my kit. It's a real thing of beauty (visually & sonically) which I fully intend to play rather than put in on the shelf. Hope you enjoy the pics!

1938 8"x15" Leedy Broadway Standard
1947-53 14x6.5" NOB Ludwig & Ludwig Universal
...plus a bunch of mismatched Slingerlands that collectively make a pleasing noise.

Absolutely gorgeous snare drum. I'm actually in the talks with another forum member to pick up a Super Ludwig. I've never owned one of these 20s drums and have always wanted to. Congrats on the find. I'm happy to hear that you're playing the drum too.

In the '20s wasn't it called a Super Ludwig rather than a Super Sensitive?

Thanks for the comment. The bottom hoop is stamped 'Super Sensitive'. Not sure what the differentiation was from a 'Super Ludwig'.

The super sensitive model has a set of snares that go under the batter and resonant head. The extra lever to the right of the throw controls the auxiliary snares. The Super Ludwig only had what we know today as the "supersensitive throw" and not the auxiliary snares.

Thanks for clarifying. Just complicate matters further, there is also the New Era model where apparently the snares are under the batter head but also on top of the snare head (e.g. inside the shell).
