Ludwig Steel shell, help…

Loading...

Hi, a frind of mine give me a Ludwig Snare drum, it look like a recent LM402, 10 imperail lugs, P85 throwoff, keystroke Monroe Badge…

But this snare seems to be heavy to have a ludalloy shell, so I try the magnet test and it stick on the shell.

Do you know this model ? Was there Supra with steel shells ?

I will post pictures soon.

Thats a late model supraphonic. It should have an aluminum shell. A magnet should not stick to the shell. Use a STRONG magnet for the magnet test, not one of those floppy refrigerator magnets. If a strong magnet sticks, then something is up and its a steel shell. Never heard of a steel shell supra though...

I try with a bigger magnet, it sticks a little bit, then I try on a old Tama Steel shell and the magnet sticks reallly more than on this LM402.

Perhaps is it just a little bit of steel in this LM402 shell ?

If you sound like John Bonham when you play it then its LudalloyKeep on Pl? Could be COB though.

There is no steel in the shell. The chrome itself may make a small magnet stick somewhat, but I guarantee yo that there is no steel in that shell, its aluminum.

Its possible it could be COB, but.......a magnet still does NOT stick to brass either.....

Actually, I'm almost certain I saw reference to some steel shell Supras that came out in the 70's. Someone at another forum had extensively researched it and cited the information somewhere. But, it doesn't sound like they were all that common -prototypes, perhaps? But I know I have read something about them somewhere.

And there are different grades of aluminum with variable levels of impurities depending on the grade. Aircraft grade aluminum probably is not the grade used to make Ludalloy shells.Burger Kin

That is true there were a few experimental steel drums made in the 70's....but this one has a Monroe badge, which would make it 1985 or newer, so it would not be stell. It is aluminum for sure.
