Ludwig stainless B/O kit "barn find"

Loading...

So the "barn" was actually a nasty garage below a duplex, but I'm posting the story to remind the VDF members that great deals on vintage drums are really still out there!

I have had some luck finding gear on the Letgo app in my area recently. I think that the app makes it so easy to click a pic and post an item, that people do it without much forethought. In fact the image recognition in the app will even create a title for the listing automatically. This kit was auto-titled just Black and Grey Drums $200 Negotiable. The one and only poorly lit photo was of the drums stacked up in a dark dirty corner. When I zoomed in and saw a few pixels of a blue and olive badge, it was all I needed to make the 20 min drive to investigate.

The kit turned out to be a 70's 12,13,18,22 stainless wrap, clear interiors, close badge numbers, no extra holes, no rust, no pitting, and the stainless is cleaning up very very nicely. The only negatives are the missing reso side tom rims, front bass hoop and claws, and one bass spur. Like many of the era it was played concert tom style, and those parts were lost along the way. But, to make up for it, the deal did include a tubular B/O hi hat stand, and a nice 80's Pearl steel shell snare with stand and carry bag. All for $150...after all, the ad said it was negotiable:)

By the time I hunt down the missing bits (PM me if you have any of them) and put some new heads on it, I will have to spend more than the cost of the kit, but I think I'll still end up way ahead.

Anyway, it is worth downloading the Letgo app and making it part of your daily searches. I'll post pics when I finish getting it cleaned up.

Happy Easter everyone!

Nice deal! It's a chrome-o-wood, right? Not stainless shells?

Sweet deal - congrats on the score! I have a Pearl 5" steel snare with a Gladstone strainer that sounds excellent - I think you'll dig it.

I'm convinced that drums that you get great deals on at estate sales, garage sales, or found buried away in barns sound better.

Good for you! Somewhere there is a giant pile of hoops and tension rods that were removed from the 70's.

Thank you!

...and piles of the old pillows we crammed into our bass drums.

These Great Slingerland drums (20-12-14) were found in a heap of stuff on the screened-in porch of a run down house out in the country northwest of Fort Worth. If memory serves me well, I paid $150 for the three drums and some rusty cymbal stands. Aside from the years of grime that was covering the drums, the only issue was that the bands of white sparkle wrap had become delaminated with the top layer peeling away from bottom layer. The same was true for the white inlays on the hoops. The fix was simple and relatively inexpensive. I measured the length and width of the damaged bands. Then, I contacted Precision to make replacement bands in vintage White Marine Pearl to almost match my 4x13 Radio King snare drum. This is a terrific little drum set. The serial numbers date the drums to the late 1960s--not the 1976 bicentennial year.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

If the shells are wood (or white Vistalite) then those are Chrome-O-Wood which are wrapped in chrome plated steel rather than stainless. I've owned a COW set since 1975 and always thought they looked very cool although I haven't used mine in a long time.

Sounds like you got quite a sweet deal.
