LUDWIG SS snares? after market vs genuine?

Loading...

I have a 70s ludwig super sensitive snare that has after market wires. they are most likely gibraltar because I think they and puresound are the only ones who make them. Out of all my ludwig snares this one is actually the "least" sensitive and only one not to have genuine ludwig snares. Im using the same heads at about the same tension on all my snares and do know how to adjust the drum properly at both ends so these are not factors. I have all various sizes and years of supraphonics even a black beauty. This is my only SS and ironically its the least sensitive of all of them.

My question is, are these after market wires crap compared to the real thing????

Im either going to get real ludwig wires or sell the drum. These wires are not cheap so I figured this would be the place to ask before I buy them. The drum doesnt sound bad by any means, but why would someone put up with the bulkiness and complexity of a super sensitve strainer if its not going to deliver?

Jack Lawton was talking to me about this a few weeks ago, he was making a set of snare wires for someone's SS that were individually adjustable because the new ones did not have that ability (you know, all held together by one strip of brass or something).

I can't remember exactly what he said, or even if he mentioned Ludwig still makes them. Give him a call.

So yeah, what you want is get snare wires that can be individually adjusted like the older SS models. That is what is meant to make it "super" sensitive.

I teach lessons at a school that has two Super-sensitives that are only about 5 years old or so. They have factory Ludwig wires on them. One sounds great, the other was so un-adjustable that the director had me remove the whole assembly and put an adapting plate on the drum. It had a factory flaw that never allowed the mechanism to engage correctly and was out of warranty by the time I got ahold of it.

Yeah, if you have the dough to have someone custom make you individually tunable wires, go for it!
