Alright, I've got a beef - see if anyone agree's with me. Been playing my 67 ludwig bop, downbeat set since the early 70's. Came with the speed king which broke along the way. Since replaced with a vintage Camco, chain drive. Recently bought a reconditioned speed king from a member. Guess what - same gosh darn annoying squeak I remember from my first one! Certainly not as smooth as the old Camco either. Is it just nostalgia that keeps folks interested in these pedals?

Of my 4 pedals, my SK is my fav to play.
The SK is just so smooth, linear and responsive.
I'm still tweaking my Ghost and Camco but doubt they'll be as good (to me) as the SK.
You can get your SK rebuilt with all the fancy upgraded parts (search the forum I cant recall the guys name) and it will be squeak free.

From what I read, this guy can make your pedal as smooth as glass and squeak free.

I bought one from BFulton and it's as slick as you know what on a doorknob! About the same time I bought another "Gone over" SK from another seller on the vdf. That one squeaked, had a beater full of worm holes and a bent link, which was not the pedal depicted in the photo on his site. For the $50 plus shipping I basically got a core pedal which I sent to Bill (bfulton) who did his hoo doo on it slicking it up for a nominal fee.
If you have a sluggish squeaky speed king contact Bill, great guy to deal with. And if you're buying on line make sure that the item depicted in the pic is the same one for sale!
I have two speed king pedals, one ive had since about 1992, I use light machine oil and it never squeaks, another I picked up in a yardsale is unusally original and I actually had hoped that it WOULD squeak,(just for an "unrestored vibe" and it does not. I just cleaned it up a bit and who knows maybe it will now.
by the way, one of my pedals has rubber bumpers on the two parts that hit the bd hoop( the tabs with a hole on either side of the toe clamp, they are held in with brass brads, I have nevers seen this before, was this a mod or is it original?

I have 3 speed Kings. A WFL and 2 70's model's.. Anybody
ever heard of 3in1
I would be more concerned with spring and tension situations. Mine are fine.

I use RC car electric motor oil when the squeak gets old.
Otherwise I dig it.
Thanks one and all for the feedback. I'll probably play with some lubes, see if I can actually pin down the source of the squeak, and continue using the Camco!
