Ludwig Snare ID Help...

Hoping to help a friend to ID this Snare... 7x14 Maple shell. He also has the matching 24 BD, 18 FT & 14 tom for this kit. He bought the kit 2nd hand around 20 years aqo, but thinks these drums were probably part of a much larger kit. If a time frame for the snare could be established , he may be able to speculate just what that larger kit may have been....

Cheers

John

Based on the serial, I'd guess 83-84. The strainer doesn't appear to be original to the drum, or at least I've never seen that strainer on a US made Ludwig.

That badge dates it to 1984 which was Ludwig's last year in Chicago. They brought the keystone design back for their 75th anniversary. They continued to use it after the move but from then on it said Monroe at the bottom. I think that was called the Rock/Concert model. That strainer is an import and wouldn't have been original to the drum. The shell is 6 ply maple/poplar.

Almost all the catalog outfits came with a metal snare as standard equipment so this may not have been of the named kits but a special order. That really doesn't matter because all the drums were the same regardless of the outfit names given to particular groupings of sizes.

Thanks very much Guys.... I have passed that info on.. he is asking an estimate on value as well, I suggested a couple of more detailed pics may assist with that..

(I am not certain if any extra holes were drilled for the strainer).

Thanks again... John

Ebay is what I use for pricing. I think the values given on this site tend to be from a buyer's perspective.

They guys got you zeroed in a date but it looks like a Coliseum snare that has a different throw-off and butt (although we don't get to see the butt pics). I'm thinking this may have came with a P-87/P-34 combination. More pics would be helpful.

In good shape they get listed in the $400 range on eBAY, a little more if they have the Twin Channel die cast hoops. The kit is in a common black cortex so the finish isn't rare, it is most like a six-ply set, pics would let us know if it's a power tom set. The power tom shells are less desirable than standard size toms for the 14" rack tom.

I think if it has 12 lugs it would be the Coliseum.

If not could be the Rock/Concert model

the date is correct 84ish like K.O. mentions.

can't tell by pics if 12 lugs.

I also thought it was a coliseum at first glance but I don't see 12 lugs on that. Lugs would be closer together and depth is 8".

Did make me think that I need to dig my old Coliseum out for a cleaning. The first brand spankin' new drum I ever bought.

I have been googling.., They sure are a beast of a drum D' Drummer.... The pic that I posted is the only image that I have seen of the snare.. but I too agree, looks to be a 10 lug drum.

I have asked for some better pics. The owner is now living in Brisbane & has the snare with him but the rest of the kit is still in a Melbourne studio (about 2000 km's of separation) So I cannot provide pics of the toms or bd at the moment.

Cheers

It's a "beast" all right. Served me well in the 1980's though...
