Hey guys, what do think of the Ludwig SL line from the 80's? Thanks.

Never played any but from the looks of them, it would be a solid no from me.

If they have the four ply "Super Classic" shells then they are decent drums. They were the cheaper line of drums at the time using the smaller lugs and cheaper wraps but sounded really good because of the shells. They don't bring a lot of money though.

No. They are the regular die cast small Classic lug. They never made those in plastic as far as I know. They did make the plastic Combo lugs but they don't look anything like any other lug. Mike Layton had an acrolite with plastic Bowties and there is a thread on this site where someone claimed to have plastic Standard/Rocker lugs on a snare.

Well....considering the value of the parts on that kit, I might change my initial assessment of them. I still wouldn't want a kit like that for myself, but it might be worth it to you since you're desperate to get rid of those European drums. Anyway, from the pics you have shown so far, they seem like they are in decent condition.

Ya, they are in great condition, not crazy about the metal hoops, but I got a bit of cash and I put the 12 on Reverb.

When I saw the metal hoops, my knee-jerk reaction was that it wasn't worth the time of day. I thought it might have been an attempt, by an American company, to copy a cheap, Asian made kit (which, ironically, was Asia's attempt to build an American style drum kit!) But after I considered that the hardware, alone, was probably worth several hundred dollars and that the shells weren't Luan and were in good condition, I'm changing my opinion. That will likely be a much better kit for you to "deal" with in a couple weeks when you decide to flip it for something else! ;) -j/k! Enjoy them, man!

I don't believe the metal hoops are original, all the Ludwig SL kits I've seen in the catalogs had wood hoops.
