Ludwig Silver Sparkle pre-serial downbeats 12" & 14"

Loading...

Hey drum gurus, I wanted to show my 1961 Ludwig pre-serial # downbeat 12" & 14" floor tom(s), and get an idea of their value and your thoughts on the condition and if they appear to be original. I have pics of the 12" here (the rims/tension rods appear to be original, but are not pictured as I'm waiting on new heads I ordered). The 14" floor tom pics will be added this weekend hopefully.

If I put them on eBay what should/would they go for? Should I sell them together or separate?

Let me know what you think!

If there is no bass, they are already orphans. I think in this case, separated would be the way to go. If a buyer really wants to keep them together, they will bid accordingly. Silver sparkle is a popular finish, but not one of the rarer ones. The 12" I would estimate somewhere in the $125-150 range. 14" floor toms always command more money. I would expect that to sell for $375-$400 or more. Then again, you are talking about eBay-- which is many times erratic and unpredictable. It all depends on who & how many are watching the auctions, and more importantly if you just happen to get two bidders fighting over it.

Apologies if this is tangential, but if you had the matching pre-serial 20" bass--selling them as a kit would definitely be the way to go. I bet a 20-12-14 pre-serial in decent shape might approach a grand. Certainly much more than that if with matching Downbeat snare. I just think too many sellers think that in order to profit the most, the boilerplate is to always split up & part out a kit. I do not think that is always the case.

Thanks for the feedback - here are the pics of the 14" floor tom (rims/legs not pictured). I think I'm going to eBay soon with these.

And, I thought this was quite interesting - they both have same date stamped on them from Sept, 1961. Pretty cool!

Those are gorgeous! I'd suggest hunting for the BD, maybe a snare, & sell it as a kit. If too much time passes then rethink individual listings.

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Wow, thanks for the feedback everyone! I have tried to find a preserial silver sparkle 20" bd, but with no luck. I see the '64-'69 22"-ers all the time, and even some '64-'69 20's.

I'm leaning towards selling individually on eBay (unfortunately), with them listed at the same time so that if someone wants both they can bid/purchase accordingly.

I did see the item # on eBay: 261003356748 sell for over $600, but that's a '69, and mine is a '61 preserial so I think mine would be worth more. Plus, I'd say mine is damn close to collector grade.

Thoughts?
