I just picked up a B/O 16" SBP FT in a trade. Nice drum. Anyway, the serial number and the shell construction seem to be off by a few years, but the badge/grommet/wrap all look original. Seven digits - 1529525, which place in the 77/78 era. This shell appears to be a 3-ply clear, laquered w/rings, which according to what I have read places the shell close to 10 yrs earlier than the badge. Am I right on this?

I'm pretty sure they were making 3-ply drums up to '76, so that is probably what you got.

Yep, but the 70's era ones I have seen all had Grantione interiors, and the later 70's ones didn't have rings.

If I'm not mistaken, the larger FTs (16x18 and 18x20) never got the granitone interior (they stayed clear). Also, I've seen this era of concert toms that were clear and not granitione, so I would assume it's very possible that a 16x16 slipped out clear from time to time. Ludwig was known for some interesting 'overlapping' from time to time...

yep. probably because they were leftover earlier shells that put together at a later date. cool stuff!
