I have recently been working on my 1964 Ludwig Pioneer Snare. This is a family heirloom (originally purchased and played by granddad, played by dad) so I have attempted to refinish as clean as possible. As seen in pictures I am in need of some clean six lug hoops. I "borrowed" these from another Pioneer I have.

So I started with an old "refinish" that Grandad and little brother tried around 15 years ago.

I sanded down rough spots and prepped shell for refinish. In the meantime, I had hardware soak in Dawn solution for a few days.

I applied 2 coats of Minwax Red Mahagony stain, and 3 coats of Poly sealer. In addition, I applied 2 coats of new paint to the interior after doing a color match to the best of my ability. the color is actually called "drumhead" and is made by Valspar (Lowes). I featherd the edges with a 1 inch trim brush and tried to be straight as possible. I finished the interior with a coat of Poly as well. Re-assembled the drum with cleaned hardware and this is how she came out.

I've noticed 2 small runs in the last coat of poly (very minor) after re-assembling drum. I may try to use 1000 grit...I'm not sure.

I outfitted drum with Aquarian clear snare side resonant and a Texture Coated with Power Dot on batter.

The project was fun. I believe she looks and sounds better than before.
