Ludwig - Pioneer Snare (COB)

I just started another thread, but it was about a Slingerland set I was given by my stepfather. I felt this one deserved its own thread so as to not get lost in the mix.

He also gave me what turns out to be a Ludwig Pioneer snare drum. The only thing that is missing are the snares. Strainer and all that are in tact. I took it apart last night and cleaned it all up...she looks great.

THIS Pioneer is Chrome on Brass - single piece shell. The best I can find on line is that it is probably from the 1930's. No serial number.

I forgot to get a pic....I'll do that later.

Can anyone shed any light on this drum....durability....value, etc? Is this a drum I should be using, or should I just clean her up and stash away for future sale?

I've been all over the internet today. I'll be damned if I can find any real info on this snare. All of the "PIONEER" snare drums I find appear to be much newer....with the keystone badge.

This one has the perfectly round badge...black and gold.

This should have tube lugs?

Yes, these are very playable and durable... Not under high tension if it has hoops and clips..

Value depends on the depth of the drum and condition.

A photo would answer that...

Yep...that's right. Tube lugs....eight of 'em. All in great shape. I've already had it apart to clean everything up.

Snare size is 5 X 14....hoops and shell in great shape.

It even appears that the case it came in is probably original.....or at least from that era. Two compartments...one for the drum, one for a stand and sticks, etc. Made of a very firm cardboard material, but still looks almost new.

Very nice drum and you do not see a lot of them all original in such great shape.

My estimate is between $250 and $400 for that depth

Thanks for the help....regardless of value, she's staying here to be used by a select few in the studio!
