Ludwig Paiste 18 arrived today..

Background: I'm trying to pull together a set of 602s for the 1967 Ludwig Downbeat kit. The goal is to get the originality thing going...and if I ordered cymbals with the kit from the catalog, 602s is what I'd get.

I found a 20 that is may a little heavy, but I like it, and a pair of hats.

A LIGHT 18 crash however, is really hard to come by!

So I bought a made in Germany Ludwig Paist Standard....and it sounds...pretty good. A little tinny, but I guess that's to be expected. 3 or 4 rivets from now, well, it may work just fine!

For the money -- compared with the 602s -- not a bad deal. Like I said...a few rivets, and who knows??

I'm going to put an ad in the swap section for a LIGHT 18!

Hey, I just put the 'swap' ad in, and realized I don't know the weight of a 'thin/light' early 602.

When it comes to the, I'm ignorant.... advice appreciated!

I've heard that the thin 18s are so hard to find because a lot of them cracked.

I've been using a nice Paiste "full crash" 18 that's cracked... and cracked is okay with me...to a point...

Still jonesing for that preserial 602 18" Thin Crash, eh?

Based on current offerings (the reissues) I'd say 1380g or less. That's a Thin Crash in the reissued series.

Based on 112 weights I've recorded in my database if you want one to weigh under 1380g, that is about 17% of the ones sold (which have weights). The other 83% sold are crash/rides or rides. Give or take a bit.

You might be satisfied with 1400g, but only your hair dresser knows for sure.

Don't bother with 1400g or over. But I think you worked that out already.

So how heavy is your 20" anyway? I've finally on to doing a bit of preliminary analysis of the 20" rides and produced a fact sheet click here to see it. If it is under 2500g I'm calling it Medium, over that Heavy. But Paiste 602 rides tend to be heavier than other brands from the same period. I'm still not sure exactly where Thin kicks in as you go below 2000g.
